Jakarta. A total of 52 Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in Hong Kong registered as new students of the Open University during the first term of 2021 by choosing various study programs, such as Management, Communication, Law, and English Translation.

All the new students attended the New Student Study Orientation (OSMB) and Distance Learning Skills Training (PKBJJ) which were held online, on March 21, 2021.

Head of the Center for Overseas Student Management (PPMLN), Open University, Dr. Pardamean Daulay, S.Sos., M.Si said that the OSMB and PKBJJ activities are one of UT's efforts to accelerate so that new students can adapt to the distance lecture system, which requires each student to be able to learn independently without depending on the lecturer.

This learning system is very different from lectures in face-to-face (conventional) tertiary institutions, where lecturers guide and direct students to study, but the learning system at UT does not require students to attend class so that lectures can be followed while working.

This kind of lecture system makes PMIs in Hong Kong very enthusiastic about participating in the education program at UT during their busy work.

To date, there are 154 UT students in Hong Kong who are actively attending lectures, 27 students are on leave from college and 21 others are crossing the semester limit.

Meanwhile, data obtained from the Indonesian Embassy in Hong Kong, there are around 180 thousand PMIs, almost 100 percent of whom are women working in the informal sector.

Thus, if calculated, the number of UT students is only 15 percent of the total PMI in Hong Kong. Therefore, Pardamean Daulay, who recently served as Head of PPMLN UT, is targeting an increase in the number of UT students in Hong Kong.

The increase in the number of UT students in Hong Kong is optimistic that it will be achieved because so far the cooperation between UT and the Indonesian Embassy in Hong Kong, and the Management of the Pokjar (Pokjar) UT Hong Kong has been well established.

This can be seen from the presence of the Education and Cultural Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, Mr. Yaya Sutarya and the Consul for Social and Cultural Affairs of the Indonesian Consulate in Hong Kong, Ms. Theodora Prassanti in the OSMB and PKBJJ activities.

In fact, on this occasion, the two representatives from the Indonesian Embassy in Hong Kong also provided material as reinforcement and motivation to new students who are all PMI and most of them work in the informal sector.

After graduating and earning a bachelor's degree from UT, it is hoped that PMIs can work in the formal sector. "Working while studying is not an easy thing, therefore UT students are required to be independent and share their time," said Yaya.

The OSMB and PKBJJ activities this time felt very special because the resource person who gave the material was the UT Deputy Chancellor for Institutional Development and Cooperation, Mr. Rahmat Budiman, M.Hum., Ph.D.

On this occasion, Mr. Rahmat, delivered a very interesting and important material for UT new students, which was entitled "Being Smart, Creative, Innovative, Independent & Qualified Students".

For 45 minutes, Mr. Rahmat provided information and exercises on how to master effective learning skills, reading skills and recording reading results, skills in accessing various UT online services, including online tutorial services (tuton).

Meanwhile, Mrs. Etty Susanty, SE., M.Si, as the Coordinator of Learning Assistance and Teaching Material Services (BBLBA) of PPMLN-UT provided material on preparing learning plans and targets and managing study time well.

In this activity, students were very enthusiastic about participating in the training.

This can be seen from the activeness of students in asking questions and doing assignments or exercises that are discussed by the instructor.

Through this training, it is hoped that it can produce students with independent characteristics as the main capital in undergoing the distance learning system at UT so that they can study well and graduate on time. (VOI)
