Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini on Tuesday handed compensation to the family of Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer, Patrolman 1st Class, I Komang Wira Natha, who died during a Nemangkawi operation in Papua.

The compensation was handed to Natha’s mother Ni Wayan Sujati at the Budi Perkasa Social Rehabilitation Hall for Physical Disabilities (BRSPDF) in Palembang.

“Once again, the government has expressed its condolences and hopes that the family will not give up because their son has become the flower of the nation,” the minister said.

The compensation included a savings book valued Rp100 million for the Brimob officer who died on duty, Rp15 million in cash for his heirs, and staple food packages. He was also awarded a certificate of merit for his dedication to humanitarian social services in Papua.

In addition, South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru donated Rp15 million in cash and staple food packages to Natha’s family. The Brimob officer was a resident of East Ogan Komering Ulu district, South Sumatra province.

Papua has suffered from frequent violence unleashed by armed separatists, who have burnt down several public facilities, forcing many locals to leave the area, Rismaharini noted.

“I initially had planned to go there, but was not allowed,” she added

Patrolman 1st Class I Komang Wira Natha was killed in a gunfight with armed separatists at the Lumawi Kampung Makko headquarters, North Ilaga district, led by Lelagek Telengan on April 27, 2021. Two other soldiers were also shot and injured in the gun battle, but managed to survive.

Natha had been with the Nemangkawi operation task force for just three months. In recognition of Natha’s dedication, the National Police chief raised his rank from young patrolman to Patrolman 1st Class. (Antaranews)
