The Indonesian badminton association (PBSI) will evaluate the team’s performance after missing all titles in the India Open 2023 held in New Delhi on January 17-22.

The Indonesian badminton team failed to bag titles in the BWF World Tour tournament India Open 2023 after three representatives failed to advance into the final of the tournament on Saturday.

“The performance of the players, especially the three representatives, who made it to the semifinals, had played really well. They had fought hard, but the opponent was much better,” Indonesia’s badminton manager, Aryono Miranat, noted in a statement here, Sunday.

“Fajar/Rian had a poor performance in the semifinals. In the first game, they played well, but when their opponent changed their strategy, they became less prepared,” he added.

According to the Badminton International Federation (BWF), Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn closed out the Indian Open 2023 on the top podium position with a triumphant 22-20, 10-21, 21-12 score over the world number one, Viktor Axelsen, in the men’s singles final.

An Se Young from South Korea claimed the crown in the women’s singles after stunning the world champion Akane Yamaguchi, with a score of 15-21, 21-16, 21-12.

In the men’s doubles final, the Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang improved their record over world champions Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik to 3-0.

The Chinese, winners of the Japan Open 2022 and runners-up in the Malaysia Open last week, held their nerve in a tight finish, 14-21, 21-19, 21-18.

The Japanese Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino won the mixed doubles title, while Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida won the women’s doubles crown after their rivals withdrew from the final.

Wang Yi Lyu, due to play the mixed doubles final with Huang Dong Ping, and Chen Qing Chen, who was to play the women’s doubles final with Jia Yi Fan, reported sick on account of suffering from diarrhea.

After competing in India, the world badminton players will head to Jakarta for the Indonesia Masters that will be held on January 24-29. (antaranews)
