VOINews, Jakarta: The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) has confirmed that Nusantara, Indonesia's new capital city being developed across parts of North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara regencies in East Kalimantan, is on track to become the country’s political capital by 2028.
According to OIKN Head Basuki Hadimuljono, President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the acceleration of key infrastructure development to ensure the city’s readiness. Speaking in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser, on Saturday, Basuki stated, “The President has targeted Nusantara to serve as the political capital by 2028. To achieve this, he has directed OIKN and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing to review the designs of the legislative and judicial office complexes.”
The design review includes plans for legislative and judicial buildings, residences for officials, and supporting facilities. Basuki revealed that while the Ministry of Public Works had previously developed a basic design for these complexes, President Prabowo emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation to ensure alignment with future needs. “We will soon form a design team in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, which will be guided directly by the President,” Basuki added.
To facilitate the city’s rapid development, the government and the House of Representatives (DPR RI) have agreed to allocate IDR 48.8 trillion in the 2025 State Budget. This funding will prioritize constructing an ecosystem to support the legislative and judicial sectors.
Basuki outlined the significance of the 2025–2028 development phase, highlighting the focus on completing legislative and judicial offices, official housing, and other essential infrastructure. He expressed confidence that the facilities would be operational by 2028, meeting the government’s ambitious timeline.
The decision to make Nusantara the political capital reflects Indonesia’s commitment to creating a more balanced development framework, moving key government functions away from Jakarta. This strategic shift aims to reduce overpopulation and economic disparity while promoting regional growth in Kalimantan.
By 2028, it is expected that all three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—will have fully transitioned to Nusantara. Basuki reaffirmed this, stating, “President Prabowo has set a clear target: by 2028, Nusantara will be Indonesia’s political capital, with all government institutions operating from there.”
With the legislative and judicial sectors as top priorities, the development of Nusantara is poised to redefine Indonesia’s administrative landscape, ushering in a new era of governance and regional development./ANTARA
