VOINews.id, Jakarta: Indonesian president Joko Widodo welcomed the plan by Georgetown University of Washington D.C., United States (U.S.) to open a branch campus in Jakarta next year. This statement was conveyed by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in an official transcript sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday (14/11) as reported by Antara from Jakarta.

The United States government said in a statement that the opening of the university in Jakarta aims to provide degree programs for policymakers in the United States, Indonesia, and ASEAN member countries.

"The presence of Georgetown University will help build human resources and research capacity between Indonesia, the United States, and Southeast Asian countries in the fields of environment, development, governance, and security," said the White House release.

A joint statement by the two leaders released by the White House further stated that the presence of the university would help Indonesia build its human resources and research capacity while training prospective American policy experts to have a good understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Previously, during his U.S. visit, President Joko Widodo gave a public lecture at Georgetown University, which was attended by around 700 participants. Besides meeting US President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C., the President visited the U.S. to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, from 15 to 17 November.
