"The formulation of the (preparation of the Al-Quran script) guidelines is officially began in early September 2020," said the Head of the Research, Development, Education and Training Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs, Suyitno at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (16/11/2023) as quoted from the ministry website.
Suyitno explained that before the script was compiled, the LPMQ first compiled a standardized guide on reading the Quran in sign language. Therefore, related disabled people have the same perception about how to read the script. The preparation process, he continued, involved the community of people with disabilities, sign language interpreters, and teachers of school of special needs, as well as experts from universities.
Previously, the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said that the MQI was the first in Indonesia, even in the world. He conveyed this on one occasion on Monday (11/13/2023) in Jakarta. Yaqut hopes that the presence of the script can facilitate access for people with disabilities to the holy book.
"Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), the process of compiling the manuscript of the Al-Quran has been completed and we will print it soon. This will be the first sign language script of the Al-Quran in Indonesia, even the world," said Yaqut, as quoted by the minisstry website.
According to the Ministry of Religion, the preparation of the MQI is based on article 14 letter (c) of Act Number 8 of 2016 on Persons with Disabilities. In the article, it is stated that people with disabilities "have the right to receive easily accessible services of holy books and religious literature".
