The Indonesian Consulate General in Noumea, in collaboration with the Xârâcù Center for Arts, Crafts Association (Centre d'Art et d'Artisanat de Xârâcùù - CAAX) and the Canala City Government, New Caledonia, held a handicraft training made from bamboo for 10 days. It has been started since October 9, 2024, and it will be over on October 18, 2024. The training aims at introducing bamboo handicrafts and teaching the local community skills. Bamboo was chosen as the teaching material because various types of bamboo plants are found around Canala City but have not been optimally utilized by local residents.

The training material was delivered by a lecturer at AKSERI Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Yogyakarta, FX Supriyono. He has previously provided similar training in Canala and several other areas in New Caledonia. He also shared his knowledge in Fiji in 2007. The man born in Lubuk Linggau, Sumatra, has also written several books in the field of crafts, one of which is “Wood Finishing with Spray Technique,” published in 2020.

As quoted from the press release by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia to Noumea, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia Bambang Gunawan, in his remarks at the training, conveyed that capacity-building training like this is a routine program conducted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Noumea.

Besides, he also hopes that this year's training can be a forum for sharing knowledge and skills in utilizing bamboo, so that participants can create quality products such as sofas, tables, and decorations that not only have functional but also economic value.

In addition to focusing on bamboo handicrafts, the training is also utilized to teach the processing of natural products, such as tubers, fruits, and vegetables, especially to the women in the village.

In addition to Canala town, there will also be a short training on coconut processing on the island of Maré, New Caledonia, from October 19 to 24, 2024.

Previously, in 2023, the Consulate General of Indonesia to Noumea had also organized training on cassava-based food processing in Voh Town, in collaboration with the local cultural center and the Government of Northern Province, New Caledonia. Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia to Noumea, Bambang Gunawan, affirmed that the training is expected to strengthen the skills of local communities while strengthening relations between Indonesia and New Caledonia through cultural and economic cooperation.
