The national anthem "Indonesia Raya" was finally sung in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after Indonesia pair Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu grabbed a gold medal in the badminton women's double on Monday.

Shortly after receiving this awaited good news, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) congratulated them on his official Instagram account @Jokowi, saying that the gold medal was a gift for Indonesia's Independence Day, which falls on August 17.

"This victory has indeed become a gift of Indonesia's Independence Day that will be celebrated two weeks more. Congratulations and Thank You Greysia/Apriyani," he said on his Instagram account on Monday.

This Indonesian pair grabbed the gold medal after beating the People's Republic of China's Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan in two sets 21-19, 21-15.

As of Monday at 2:24 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), Indonesia's medal tally in this world's most prestigious multisport events comprises one gold, one silver, and two bronzes.

Indonesia's victory at the Musashino Forest Plaza was portrayed by the news writer of Tokyo 2020 Olympics' official website as "one of the most unexpected results in badminton Olympic history".

ANTARA noted that the badminton has repeatedly contributed to Indonesia's medal tally in various Olympics games, except in the 2012 London Olympics.

The first two gold medals from badminton tournament of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics were obtained from Alan Budi Kusuma in men's single, and Susi Susanti in women's single. (Antaranews)
