March in Indonesia this year is very interesting, since the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims begins, along with the Saka New Year and celebration of Nyepi, or Day of Silence, for Balinese Hindus.

There is something similar between Ramadan, with its fasting obligation and tarawih prayers, and the Saka Hindu New Year observed by Nyepi celebrations. Thereby, both followers of the religions uphold the shared destiny of self-reflection and do sorts of worship to create purity and cleanliness from sincerity and patience in carrying out the ritual.

Besides, in March, the results of the 2024 Indonesian general elections will also be officially announced by the General Election Commission (KPU). From these results, all unsuccessful candidates must accept sincerely and patiently results from the election process, which previously got quite tiring and took a lot of energy and capital.

Apart from seriousness, focus, and common sense, the essence of what is done in carrying out any activity also requires patience and sincerity in enduring the process. Patience, sincerity, self-reflection, and mutual understanding are key to daily life.

In addition, understanding differences to avoid disputes also requires sincerity, patience, and mutual understanding in dealing with differences. So, surely, sincerity and patience are important parts of facing the process of life. Especially in the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims must be able to restrain their desires patiently and sincerely. This is the main essence of self-control in carrying out the fast. Like celebrating Nyepi Day, Balinese Hindus can reflect on themselves and remain silent by not doing any activities for 24 hours. The expected result is purity of heart and self as if one is reborn.

So, Nyepi and Ramadan this year are interrelated and complement each other for the adherents of Islam and Balinese Hinduism, not only for the two religious communities but also for all religious communities in Indonesia. The implementation of Hindu and Islamic worship can be a self-reflection for the entire Indonesian. Heart management, such as restraining lust, being patient and sincere, and focusing on goals, can be the main support for the Indonesian people to move forward in dealing with various problems.
