President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) awarded the title of national hero to six figures at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.
The six figures awarded the title of national hero in 2018 were the late Abdurrahman Bawesdan of Yogyakarta, the late Supreme Hajjah Andi Depu from West Sulawesi Province, and the Depati Amir of Bangka Belitung Province.
The three other figures awarded the hero title were the late Kasman Singodimejo from Central Java Province, the late Prince Mohammad Noor from the Province of South Kalimantan, and the late Brigadier General KH Syam`un from Banten Province.
President Jokowi awarded the national hero title at the State Palace on Thursday through Presidential Decree Number 123 /TK/2018, dated November 6, 2018, on the Awarding of the National Hero Title.
The award ceremony was held as part of the 2018 National Heroes Day commemoration series.
The late Abdurrahman Baswesdan is the grandfather of Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and is a figure, who fought to make Arab descendants an integral part of the Indonesian nation.
Born on September 9, 1908, in Surabaya and brought up in Yogyakarta, Baswedan has been involved in the fight for independence through movements by applying the ideals of creating an independent and sovereign Indonesia.
He carried out his struggle through the world of journalism, with his writings in the newspaper as well as participation through the Indonesian Arab Party. He was also a member of the Preparatory Work Committee for Indonesian Independence.
The late Agung Hajjah Andi Depu is an actor of Indonesian history and a female figure, who has remained highly dedicated and loyal to the fight for Indonesian independence.
She is a female figure from West Sulawesi, born on August 19, 1908, and fought for Indonesian independence by mobilizing and coordinating as closely as possible the youths to fight colonialism in Indonesia.
The late Depati Amir was a leader of the resistance against the Dutch in the 1830-1851 period. He succeeded in including a combination of local residents and the foreigner community or Chinese miners.
The hero, whose title was proposed by the people of Bangka Belitung Province, had implemented resistance through a guerrilla warfare with the Netherlands for two decades.
The late Kasman Singodimejo was a Muhammadiyah figure, who united the nation during the UUD 1945 Constitution ratification process by the Preparatory Committee for Independence.
He succeeded in winning the heart of the Islamic group of Ki Bagus Hadikusumo to eliminate additional words after "Believe in one God" in the first principle of the state ideology of Pancasila.
The original concept was "Believe in one God with the obligation of Muslims to practice Islamic law." These additional words were eliminated since they were rejected by representatives from eastern Indonesia.
The late Ir H Prince Mohammad Noor was a figure, who had fought along with the people to maintain independence since studying at THS Bandung until he become a member of "Jong Islamieten Bond."
As a governor based in Yogyakarta, Mohammad Noor conducted military training for the youth to be deployed in the battlefield against the Dutch in Kalimantan.
In the meantime, the late Brigadier General KH Syam`un was a figure, who struggled through an educational approach by establishing a pesantren and taking up arms against the Dutch. (ANTARA)

Domestic producers include PT Pindad which produces the main weapons systems for the army, PT PAL for the navy, and PT Dirgantara Indonesia for the air force. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said, a country needs security and defense to protect the country and its people from various threats, both internal and external threat from other country. A country must have armed forces and weapons. For this reason, Jusuf Kalla, who is also a figure in the world peace, asked the domestic defense industry to continue to be improved with technological and scientific innovation.
“The defense industry is needed for independence. We have experience when embargoed in the 90s because of the Timor problem, how difficult it is to obtain defense equipment because of the embargo. Therefore, a country must be ready to be independent of its own capabilities for its technology, in addition to certainly cooperating with other countries, said Jusuf Kalla.

President Joko Widodo led a limited cabinet meeting that disscussed about housing complex for government employees, Indonesian Military personnel and Indonesian Police personnel on Wednesday (7/11) at the President Office in Jakarta. In his briefing, President Jokowi said there are several important points that needs to be notice on the program such as land, model, finance and accessibility aspect. The President also underlined the importance of housing availability for government employees, Indonesian Military personnel and Indonesian Police personnel integrated with economic development that support the region.
“About land preparedness I want a complete report later. I want to know whether it is vertical or not. The second is about working accessibility that also connect with integrated economic development activities that support the region and also the payment method. So it can be from the state budget or state company or private sector but what kind of method that will be used,” President Joko Widodo said.
Furthermore President Jokowi said that government will concentrate on the speed process of the program for 945 thousands government employees, 275 thousands of Indonesian Military personnel and 360 thousands of Indonesian Police personnel all over Indonesia. The President also said that this program aims to make the government employees, military and police personnel can concentrate in performing their duty and give double effect to overcome the economic development that emerge from several activities in the accelaration of housing development program.
