Voice of Indonesia presents Let’s Speak Indonesian, a program that introduces the Indonesian vocabulary and guides you to speak in the language. Mari Berbahasa Indonesia or Let’s Speak Indonesian is a joint initiative of Voice of Indonesia and the Language Development Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. Today’s topic is about Sakit which means Sick.

Read to the conversation entitled “Ada Obatnya?” which means “Is There Any Medicine?”. This conversation is between Kevin and Mela, his workmate. They talk on the phone. Kevin has fever. Mela wants to know if Kevin has fever medicine or not.

Mela

 Sudah minum obat?

Kevin

 Belum

Mela

Ada obatnya?

Kevin

Tidak ada

Having listened to the conversation, now I am going to introduce some vocabulary and expressions related to the topic of the day.

Ada obatnya?

(2X) which means

Is there any medicine?

Tidak ada

(2X) which means

No

Ada termometernya?

(2X) which means

Is there any thermometer?

Ada

(2X) which means

Yes

In the dialog, you listen to a question “Ada obatnya?”
(2X) which means "
Is there any medicine?". In the question there is the word ada (2X) which means is there placed in the beginning of the question. To find out if someone has something or not, you can use the word ada (2X) which means is there. For example, Ada obatnya? (2X) which means Is there any medicine?

Other examples

Another example to find out if someone has something or not is Ada termometernya? (2X) which means Is there any thermometer? In Indonesian, an expression used when taking medicine is minum obat (2X) which means take medicine. So if you want to say that you have taken medicine in Indonesian, you may say saya sudah minum obat (2X) which means I have taken medicine.

That was “Let’s Speak Indonesian for today. Hopefully, this edition can be useful for those of you who want to know more about Indonesian language.
