Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Central Bank (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo launched new Rp75,000 denomination banknotes to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Indonesian Independence Day on Monday.
“The issuance of the special banknote to commemorate Indonesia's 75th anniversary was planned since 2018,” Indrawati said at an online ceremony, held to launch the new banknote.
The commemorative banknote is printed to an amount of 75 million.
Indrawati said the issuance of the banknote has involved the Finance Ministry, BI, State Secretary Ministry, Social Affairs Ministry, and heirs of founding fathers Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta, whose pictures have been featured on the Rp75,000 bill.
“The picture of founding fathers Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta, and a 'gunungan' have the philosophy of an opening and a new page for the newly proclaimed Indonesia,” she said.
BI's Governor Perry Warjiyo said the issuance of the commemorative banknote is part of the printing plan for 2020, in accordance with public demand, based on the law on currency.
“The issuance (of the banknote) has become a momentum for Indonesia to move forward,” he remarked.
BI has earlier issued special edition banknotes to mark certain events, such as the 25th and 50th anniversary of Indonesia, Children's Day, and Nature Conservation Day, among others.
On Monday, the Finance Minister and BI Governor symbolically handed over the Rp75,000 banknote to heirs of the nation’s proclamators — Guntur Soekarno Putra (Soekarno's son) and Mutia Hatta (Mohammad Hatta's daughter). (ANTARA)
