PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

The government is committed to strengthening social protection and food security, President Joko Widodo stressed while presenting the draft state budget at the DPR-RI Plenary Session for 2020-2021 here on Friday.

“For food security in 2021, around Rp104.2 trillion has been budgeted which will be directed at boosting food commodity production,” President Joko Widodo said.
The President said efforts to encourage food commodity production were carried out by building infrastructure and utilization technology.

In addition, the efforts included the revitalization of the national food system by strengthening farmer and fisherman corporations, food distribution, and development of scale food areas (food estate) to increase food productivity.

The government has also committed to improving the welfare of farmers and fishermen by targeting the Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP) and Fisherman Exchange Rate (NTN) of 102-104 in 2021.

As for the commitment to strengthen social protection, the social protection budget in 2021 of Rp419.3 trillion will be directed at accelerating social recovery and supporting the gradual reform of the social protection system.

Social protection measures are being carried out through the provision of assistance to the community through the family hope program, basic food cards, cash assistance, and pre-employment cards; encouragement of a comprehensive social protection reform program based on the life cycle; and, anticipating the aging population.

They also include improving the Integrated Social Welfare Data (DTKS) and improving the mechanism for channeling social protection programs, as well as strengthening monitoring and evaluation.

Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, on Thursday, highlighted that Jakarta had become the sole province to conduct massive swab testing to thwart the transmission of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) among the capital city's residents.

"Based on our data, Jakarta has undertaken nearly 50 percent of the total swab testing efforts, while other provinces have yet to conduct similar COVID-19 tests on a massive scale with as much seriousness," he told participants of a virtual meeting on Indonesia's economic recovery in Jakarta.

As of August 11, the Jakarta provincial administration has conducted 469,582 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, or equal to 44,113 PCR tests per one million people, as compared to the population ratio.

Jakarta's PCR testing ratio has exceeded that of the World Health Organization's standard that necessitates 10,000 PCR tests per one million people.

Amin further noted that massive swab testing is part of the preventive measures that should be undertaken to halt the spread of COVID-19 apart from contact-tracing and applying health protocols to flatten the curve of COVID-19 cases.

In reviving Indonesia's economy amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the government's COVID-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery Committee members are expected to work hard to overcome hurdles that may potentially hinder recovery efforts, he noted.

COVID-19 initially struck the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of 2019 and thereafter spread to various parts of the world, including countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Indonesian government made an official announcement on the country's first confirmed cases on March 2 this year.

To tackle this COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesia is leaving no stone unturned to develop a vaccine to fight the virus.

To this end, spokesperson for the COVID-19 Handling Task Force Wiku Adisasmito echoed the government's aspirations to prioritize the triad of safety, precision, and speed in the domestic production of the COVID-19 vaccine.

"We must say that in the development of this vaccine, the Indonesian government prioritizes three important aspects, with the first about it being safe; second, being precise; and third, being fast," Adisasmito emphasized in his recent statement.

State-owned pharmaceutical holding company Bio Farma has recently collaborated with Chinese company Sinovac to produce the COVID-19 vaccine for Indonesia. The COVID-19 vaccine material from Sinovac arrived in Indonesia on July 19.

Currently, Indonesian scientists are also working on a vaccine, named after the country's national flag, Merah Putih (Red and White). (ANTARA)

President Joko Widodo has asked all members of the National Scout Movement to lead two national movements to help promote the values of discipline and caring in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I ask for you (the National Scout Movement) to make two national movements, first is the movement of national discipline that encourages the people to follow health protocols," the President  said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The President made the statement at a ceremony to mark the 59th National Scout Movement Day. Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, and chief of Presidential Staff, Moeldoko, were present at the ceremony, while other attendees, including chief of the National Quarter of the Scout Movement, Budi Waseso, attended the ceremony via video conferencing.

"The two movements will sharpen your leadership, in deepening the true soul of scouts, as stipulated in the movement's dwi dharma (two purposes), tri satya (three essences), and dasa dharma (ten purposes) of the scouts," he added.

He emphasized that the Indonesian Scouts have always created tough generations adept in facing every challenge.

“(To be) Disciplined in taking actions, fearless in facing every challenge, always caring, ready to sacrifice for the greater good, and in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, that can be challenging, those are the characters (attributes) that we need," he continued.

As head of the National Scouts Movements' supervisory board, the President said that discipline covers abiding by health protocols, wearing masks, maintaining distance, and encouraging all elements of the public to follow the guidelines.

"The COVID-19 pandemic era has led to a health and economic crisis," he said, adding that an attitude of discipline, caring in the pursuit of joint interests, and solving problems needs to be inculcated.

He said he believed that if such values are promoted, Indonesia will be able to stem the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the associated risks.

The Indonesian Scouts Movement came into being on August 14, 1941. As the President is scheduled to deliver his State Speech in the House of Representatives on August 15 this year, the National Quarter chief Budi Waseso moved up the commemoration ceremony to Wednesday.

"The theme of the 59th National Scouts Movement Day is 'The Scouts Movement Assisting COVID-19 Handling and Defending the Nation'," Waseso said in his address. (ANTARA)

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin expressed belief that the commemoration of the 25th National Technology Awakening Day (Hakteknas) 2020 offers the right momentum for Indonesian scientists to develop the COVID-19 vaccine.

"I am optimistic that this would be an answer to the nation's self-reliance in facing existing challenges, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic," Amin stated while delivering a speech at the opening of an event to commemorate the 25th National Technology Awakening Day in Jakarta on Monday.

The vice president affirmed that technology and innovation currently held greater significance and played a more critical role in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amin expressed hope that all people would develop a greater sense of awareness of the importance of innovation and the culture of science and technology in their day-to-day lives.

"New innovations are especially necessary in the fields of health, economy, and education amid the COVID-19 pandemic to better respond to the existing challenges," he remarked.

Researchers, innovators, and the industry must also be heedful of the quality of products they manufacture.

"This is important not only in terms of the users but also for researchers, innovators, and other innovator communities, so that it can serve as a reference in the production of quality products," he emphasized.

In the meantime, Minister of Research and Technology/Head of the Research and Innovation Agency (Menristek/Head of BRIN) Bambang Brodjonegoro affirmed that several studies and innovations were underway for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research and innovations being conducted to handle the COVID-19 crisis comprise the production of ventilators, rapid diagnostic tests, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test kits, mobile lab Biosafety level 2 (BSL-2), and Red and White vaccines expected to be ready for launch in the near future.

"We, through the Eijkman Institute, continue to develop Red and White vaccines against all strains of the COVID-19 virus. Efforts have been undertaken to produce recombinant protein to manufacture vaccines," he remarked.

National Technology Awakening Day is commemorated on August 10 every year as stipulated in Presidential Decree Number 71 of 1995. The commemoration aims to mark the technological achievements of Indonesians, including the maiden flight of the Gatotkaca N-250 aircraft in 1955 in Bandung, West Java. (ANTARA)

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has lauded the innovative products developed by Indonesians in the health sector with the spirit of “gotong royong” (mutual help) to aid the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are grateful that there have been various innovations by Indonesians to create various products in the health field that we had previously imported (in) plenty,” Jokowi said at the opening of the Extraordinary Congress of Gerindra Party, held online in Jakarta on Saturday.

The conditions under the pandemic have indeed been difficult, however, the difficulty has fostered a spirit of mutual help, cooperation, and sharing of burdens among various elements of the society, he noted.

Jokowi said no country was ready to face such a crisis. More than 18 million people have been infected with COVID-19 globally and the death toll has reached 696 thousand so far.In addition, the economic growth in various countries has also experienced a deep contraction.

Some of the figures have been quite grave, including those for France (minus 19 percent), India (minus 18.9 percent), Britain (minus 17.9 percent), and the European Union (minus 14.4 percent), Jokowi said.

He also cited IMF’s prediction that the global economy is facing its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of 1930.

However, Jokowi urged the Indonesian people to keep their hopes up that the Indonesian nation would be able to deal with the challenges created by COVID-19 by itself.

This is because the Indonesian nation is a nation of fighters, he said.

“This fighting spirit is what we must continue to promote in facing this very, very difficult situation,” he remarked.

Gerindra Party was founded by Prabowo Subianto, the current Defense Minister, in February, 2008.

Subianto ran against Jokowi during the presidential elections in 2014 and 2019, but lost in both of them. Jokowi belongs to the ruling PDIP.

Nearly all political parties, including Gerindra, have currently joined the coalition of the Jokowi administration, except PKS (Justice Prosperous Party) which has remained in the opposition.  (ANTARA)
