In the 6th Strategic Dialogue Meeting, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi and Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister  Taro Kono agreed to increase maritime and fishery cooperation among the two countries. Minister Taro Kono stated in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (25/6) that the cooperation has important and very strategic meaning for the two countries with a concept of maritime development they have. The two ministers also agreed the cooperation of Integrated Marine and Fisheries Centers and Fish Market on the Indonesian outer islands. 

“We will increase our maritime cooperation. This is very meaningful for the strategies of both countries, namely Japan Free and Open Indo Pacific strategy and Indonesia as Global Maritime Fulcrum. We have just completed the signing of the exchange of notes on a program for the development of fisheries sector in outer islands. Japan will continue to implement of development of outer islands as agreed in September last year,” said Taro Kono.

Minister Taro Kono also added that he and his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi have agreed synergy between the concept of Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy  of Japan and Indo-Pacific which was initiated by Indonesia through regional mechanism such as ASEAN, and East Asian Summit (EAS) in the Pacific region and Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in the circle of the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, for cooperation of Integrated Marine and Fisheries Centers and Fish Market, the Japanese government in the near future plans to build six fishery centers on six Indonesian outer islands, namely Biak, Moa, Morotai, Natuna, Sabang, and Saumlaki. Indonesian President Joko Widodo appreciated re-election of Recep Tayyip Erdogan as President of Turkey through presidential election which was held over the weekend. President Joko Widodo said after observing the Bung Karno main stadium in Jakarta on Monday that he has received report from Indonesian foreign affairs minister on re-election of incumbent President Erdogan as the next Turkish President.

“I congratulate on re-election of President Tayyip Erdogan as Turkish President. As the two largest Muslim countries, Indonesia and Turkey, have many similarities. We hoped bilateral relations between Indonesia and Turkey will be better, more increase especially in economic and investment sector since the relationship of Indonesia and Turkey indeed closer in OIC Forums,” said President Joko Widodo.

President Joko Widodo also hoped he can directly communicate with President Erdogan through telephone line. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the presidential election by gaining more than a half from total legal votes. Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister, Taro Kono said that the government of Japan agreed to cooperate in countering terrorism acts with Indonesia. One of the cooperation is providing assistance of a biometric security system grant, in the form of face detector which will be installed at the Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta. The installation of the security system is conducted as a form of increasing security prior to the implementation of Asian Games on Mid August until September 2018. This was stated by minister Taro Kono, after the 6th Strategic Dialogue meeting between Indonesia and Japan in Jakarta on Monday (25/6).

“Japan will support activities to counter violent extremism. Japan will provide assistance in the area of counter terrorism as well. Last year, Japan provided a biometric security system in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium for Asian Games 2018,” Taro Kono said.

Japanese foreign affairs minister, Taro Kono moreover said that in addition to give the assistance of biometric security system, Japan and Indonesia currently continue to conduct cooperation to give training to other countries on the use of the security system.  Biometric security system which is developed by Japan, is advanced security system which is able to detect face and indentity of tens until hundreds of persons in a short time. Korean Peninsula Issue has become one of topics discussed in a bilateral meeting of the 6th Strategic Dialogue between Indonesian foreign affairs minister, Retno Marsudi and Japanese foreign affairs minister, Taro Kono in Jakarta, on Monday (25/6). In the meeting, the two ministers agreed to tighten sanction of resolution of the UN Security Council on North Korea which must be continued. Taro Kono in the press conference said that he and minister Retno also agreed that North Korea must conduct denuclearization fully as well as  disarmament weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.

“Regarding North Korea, we reaffirmed our commitment to the strict implementation of the UN Security resolutions and to press North Korea for complete verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles of all ranges,” Retno Marsudi said.

Furthermore Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Taro Kono said that Japan must conduct closer cooperation with Indonesia on North Korean issues since Indonesia currently becomes one of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. Minister Taro Kono and minister Retno Marsudi believed that the tightening sanction, denuclearization, and disarmament on North Korea are able to bring peace and stability in the region. The two ministers also understand positive development which occurred around North Korean issues after South-North Korean summit and North Korean- US Summit recently. (VOI/REZHA/trs-yati/NT)
