Tomorrow, February 13, 2021 will be commemorated as the 10th World Radio Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization -UNESCO designated this date as World Radio Day because of the role of this media in all walks of life.

The history of the commemoration of International Radio Day began in 1946. February 13, 1946 is the day when the UN for the first time operated UN radio to disseminate information about its activities to the entire world community.

What is interesting to note is how radio still exists, especially amid the existence of many new media platforms nowadays. Whether realized or not, the advancement of new media, such as the internet does affects the existence of radio. Even so, in fact, it turns out that not all regions of a country can be reached by the internet, whether it is for technological reasons or geographic location. This makes radio still the media of choice for access to news and entertainment, especially in remote areas. The frequency of the short waves is proven to be able to deliver information to various places that may not even be penetrated by the internet.

Based on data released by UNESCO in 2019, there are around 44,000 radio stations around the world. In some places, the number of radio stations is even higher than other media. Take for example, there are more radio stations in Africa than newspapers and television channels.

Amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, radio is a very reliable medium. When people are expected not to leave the house, radio is a very effective medium to be used to obtain various information or as study facilities at home, not to mention its very important function in times of disaster. In addition, with the advancement of digital technology, the role and function of radio can increasingly be improved following the times. Radio with its uniqueness and technological advancement that continues to develop, is able to penetrate boundaries and spaces to disseminate news, information and entertainment to listeners.

It is hoped   that in the future, the uniqueness of radio can be used more for things that are needed by the community, across time and space.

Sin Cia or Imlek is not much different from other New Years. In general, Chinese people also celebrate Chinese New Year. This celebration is also closely related to the party celebrating the arrival of Spring. The Chinese New Year celebration starts on the 30th of the 12th month and ends on the 15th of the first month or better known as Cap Go Meh. Chinese New Year celebrations include Chinese New Year prayers, prayers to the Creator / Thian and Cap Go Meh celebrations. Chinese New Year celebrations in Indonesia have been held since the reign of Indonesia's 4th President, Abdurrahman Wahid, who upholds the values of pluralism and opens up the religious freedom of the Chinese people.

Various memorials and Chinese New Year celebrations take place lively in Indonesia. One of them is at Taman Impian Jaya Ancol or Ancol Dreamland in North Jakarta, which holds a lion dance attraction into the water at the main Sea World aquarium. The event will be presented with the storyline "YinYang: Living in Harmony". Ancol Dreamland Marketing Director, Febrina Intan said that the Chinese New Year celebration is held with a simple concept while remaining attractive and paying attention to health protocols.

Let’s Speak Indonesian is a program that introduces the Indonesian vocabulary and guides you to speak in the language. Mari Berbahasa Indonesia or Let’s Speak Indonesian is a joint initiative of Voice of Indonesia and the Language Development Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.  Today’s topic is Ajakan/mengajak” which means “Invitation/invite”. Stay tuned.

Read to the conversation about Ajakan/mengajak” which means “Invitation/invite”. This conversation is between Kevinand Melawhen they are planning a weekend holidayKevin asks Mela, his workmate, to go to the beach.

Pre-recorded:

Kevin

Mela, ayo, kita berjalan-jalan ke pantai!

Mela

Ayo!

Having listened to the conversation, now I am going to introduce some vocabulary and expressions related to the topic of the day.

Ayo!  (2x)

which means Let’s go!

Kita (2x)

which means We

Berjalan-jalan (2x)

which means Take a walk

Ke Pantai (2x)

which means To the beach

Ayo kita berjalan-jalan ke pantai (2x)

which means Let’s take a walk to the beach

In the dialog, you listen to an expression Ayo, kita berjalan-jalan ke pantai! (2x) which means Let’s take a walk to the beach. In Indonesian, the word ayo! (2x) which means let’s go! is used to invite someone. The word ayo isplaced before the dialog topic. For example: Ayo, kita berjalan-jalan ke pantai! (2x) which means Let’s take a walk to the beach!

Besides ayo, another expression of invitation is yuk (2x) which means let’s go. This interjection is used when talking with a friend. It can be placed before or after the dialog topic.

For examples:

Kevin   : Mela, yuk, kita berjalan-jalan ke pantai!

Mela    : Yuk!

Kevin   : Mela, kita berjalan-jalan ke pantai, yuk!

Mela    : Yuk!

When inviting someone that you know well, Indonesians usually use the words yuk or ayo. However,to invite someone respected or someone that you do not know well yet, they usually use the word mari (2x) which means let’s go. For example: Mari kita pergi! (2x) which means Let’s go!

That was “Let’s Speak Indonesian for today. Hopefully, this edition can be useful for those of you who want to know more about Indonesian language

Lampung has various amazing natural attractions, such as Lampung elephants, a group of beautiful dolphins that often appear in Kiluan Bay. However, apart from the two attractions that you should visit if you are in Lampung, you should also try to visit a charming and exotic beach location. It is Pegadungan Beach or often referred to as Gigi Hiu Beach or Shark Tooth Beach. This beach is quite different from other beaches that are widely spread in Indonesia. The exoticism that lies in the many clusters of rocks arranged towering like cliffs makes this beach quite unique.

These rock clusters are quite high and also large, varying from 1 meter to 10 meters high. The stone arrangement seems to form teeth. It also looks like a boat sailing in the wind.  When visiting this beach, the best view you can see is when the sun rises. At that time, you will see an amazing view. The sun shines on the rocks, with the waves reflecting the light from the sun. To visit this beach, it is recommended when it is dry season. Visiting in the dry season, you will see a clean and clear view. Therefore, those of you who like photography should come at the right time. During the rainy season, usually Gigi Hiu Beach will be shrouded in fog. The beautiful scenery on Gigi Hiu Beach will be obstructed by the fog.

You may not find star or luxury hotels, but you can try to find lodging in local residents' houses, or you can return to Kilauan Bay which is not too far from that location to get lodging.  Located in Klumbayan District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, the location of Gigi Hiu Beach itself is an area that is quite far from the population and also the crowd. The location is quite remote and travel access is quite difficult. So, this place is appropriate with those of you who really have a true traveling spirit.  When visiting this beach, it is recommended with a group because this beach is still fairly quiet. So, it would be nice if you bring the necessary equipment and stick to health protocols during the trip or when you get there.
