Surakarta Proud of Gamelan Designated as Cultural Heritage by UNESCO

The Surakarta City Government is very proud of the gamelan which is designated as a cultural heritage by UNESCO. This is because gamelan ownership is appreciated by the world.

"The pride of this gamelan and always being strived to finally get results and appreciation from the world. The public interest is very proud, because the ones who practice are not only students but also employees at the school," said Regional Secretary (Sekda) Surakarta, Ahyani Sidik, while talking to Pro3 RRI, Sunday (18/9/2022).

According to him, this gamelan has become one of the potential wealth of the city. In Surakarta itself has developed this and popularized the gamelan.

"Almost in every public. We help the public by granting a set of gamelan," he said.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) issues gamelan certificates. It is an intangible cultural heritage (WBTb) to the people of Indonesia.

Previously, gamelan had been proposed to UNESCO since 2018. The certificate was handed over to the owner of the gamelan culture represented by 14 provincial governments.

Then, the Surakarta Art Institute and there is also a gamelan maestro. Gamelan Maestro (late) Rahayu Supanggah and Made Bandem. (RRI)
