Energy transition efforts must be fair and affordable, so that they can be accessed by all people, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, said on Tuesday.
Further, the industrial sector needs to be innovative and precise in technology acquisition and investment so that it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize weather anomalies, prevent climate change, and keep people from starving.
"The energy transition must focus on reducing carbon intensity and providing benefits for every household," Minister Hartarto said while delivering a statement at the “Special Event Road to G20 by HIMPUNI,” which was accessed from Jakarta on Tuesday.
To support this effort, in the latest Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document, Indonesia has raised its 2030 target for emission reduction through its own efforts from 29 percent to 31.89 percent and with international support to 43.20 percent.
"Indonesia has a commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, and that target must not be derailed," Hartarto stressed.
The government has also prepared a scheme in the field of carbon pricing and carbon trading, where green investment has proven to be more attractive in both the capital market and public branding.
Not only that, but the government is also promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce carbon emissions.
“We want to lead by example. For this reason, Indonesia continues to promote the EV ecosystem because this policy is expected to be the key to the future revolution," Hartarto said.
This commitment will be demonstrated at the G20 Summit in Bali in November, which will limit access to conventional vehicles and provides greater access to electric vehicles.
“There is only one key to ensuring a successful energy transition, namely cooperation and partnership. The public, private sector, and state-owned enterprises (BUMN) must have a role in this project," Hartarto said.
Meanwhile, Indonesia, through the G20 Presidency, is committed to inviting all member countries to come up with a global solution to the problem of carbon emissions by making the energy transition one of the priority issues of the Indonesian G20 Presidency. (Antaranews)
