President Conveys Indonesia's Readiness as ASEAN Chair

President Joko Widodo expressed Indonesia's readiness to continue to lead ASEAN in 2023. He said that Indonesia was ready to lead in the midst of a difficult world and regional situation.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said President Jokowi conveyed Indonesia's view as the Chair of ASEAN in 2023. In addition, the Head of State also expressed his appreciation for Cambodia's leadership as ASEAN Chair this year.

The President also hopes for support from Cambodia and also all other ASEAN member countries during Indonesia's chairmanship. The Foreign Minister said this was conveyed by the President during an audience with Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni, Thursday (10/11/2022).

In a meeting with ASEAN leaders with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliament Assembly, the President highlighted the various challenges facing ASEAN. The President said, in addition to trying to help resolve the Myanmar crisis, ASEAN must be able to navigate the increasing rivalry between the great powers of the region.

"President Jokowi called for the importance of ASEAN to be part of the solution," said Foreign Minister Retno. Therefore, the Indonesian government encourages the strengthening of synergies between the government and the parliaments of member countries.

The encouragement of this strengthening is solely to strengthen the unity and centrality of ASEAN. As for the chairmanship of ASEAN 2023, President Jokowi emphasized Indonesia's commitment to contribute to building ASEAN.

The development of a stronger ASEAN in order to be able to face the challenges of an increasingly complex future. "The president also hopes for parliamentary support in Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN next year," he said. (RRI)
