"Brazil's G20 Presidency in 2024 carries the theme 'Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet' to provide real solutions to the main global problem, namely social inequality," the ministry's Deputy for International Economic Cooperation, Edi Prio Pambudi, remarked in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Pambudi explained the three main priorities of discussion related to the theme. The first is social inclusion and the fight against hunger, poverty, and inequality. The second priority is energy transition and sustainable development which includes social, economic, and environmental aspects, while the third priority pertains to the revival of multilateralism and reform of global institutions.
Brazil is hosting the G20 Presidency from December 1, 2023, to November 30, 2024. The 1st Sherpa Meeting of the 2024 Brazil Presidency took place on December 11-12, 2023, at the Itamaraty Palace, Brasilia.
Pambudi also praised the Brazilian Presidency for maintaining an effective G20 structure. However, he said it is necessary to manage new and old issues as well as cross-sectoral problems.
"Learning from the previous G20 Presidencies, managing cross-sectoral issues to generate consensus is not easy," he stated.
He said that the first priority, social inclusion and the fight for inequality, is an urgent global challenge. Under the second priority of energy transition and sustainable development, Pambudi explained that Brazil, through its G20 Presidency, is keen to ensure that sustainable economic development is not only about maximizing growth but is also inclusive and not sacrificing the next generation.
In its third priority, the 2024 G20 Presidency is pushing for reform in global institutions, as many international organizations established in the 1940s do not reflect today's reality. (Antara)
