Indonesian Deputy Minister of Health, Dante Saksono, stated that the Indonesian government would immediately impose excise on packaged sweetened drinks in the country. According to him, the excise is targeted to take place starting this year.

"We will socialize it first before the implementation is decided together with the Minister of Finance as soon as possible," he said at a socialization event in Jakarta on Monday (29/1/2024).

Dante added that the government had carried out an academic study on the use of the excise some time ago. Thus, now it remains for the Indonesian Ministry of Finance to determine the amount of excise that will be applied. However, Dante did not explain how much excise was charged.

"It depends on several factors that influence it," he said.

The factors are, for example, the type of food, sugar content - including the glycemic index, processing method, and so on. Dante also emphasized that all types of packaged food and drinks will be subject to excise, including milk. "Everything without exception," he said.

According to Dante, the industry has agreed with this policy. "However, we will negotiate regarding the nutritional content levels for the imposition of excise," he said. (RRI.co.id/Fitratun Komariah)
