Students of Indonesian gamelan from Universidad de las Artes (UArtes) Guayaquil, Ecuador, hypnotized the audience of Ecuador Jazz Festival 2024 on Saturday (14/9/2024).

UArtes Gamelan Ensemble led by Dr. Andrey Astaiza showcased their original composition titled "OM", that combines gamelan traditional melody with a modern improvisation. That was stated in the written statement of the Indonesian Embassy in Quito on Monday (16/9).

The collaborative composition depicted the sound of gamelan and Ecuador's marimba, resulting in a crescendo that reminds people of the sound of a parade. The sound of gamelan in the performance was accompanied by modern instruments like saxophone and guitar, as well as local traditional instrument kalimba.

According to a written statement of the Indonesian Embassy in Quito, the performance shows that gamelan is quite versatile and can be played along other modern and traditional instruments.

The work was performed by nine students of gamelan class at the arts department, while some lecturers also played some parts in the show.

According to the Indonesian Ambassador to Ecuador Agung Kurnadi, some Indonesian diaspora mingled with locals who were watching the show.

The Indonesian Embassy in Quito explained that gamelan has been part of the music school curriculum of UArtes since 2023.

The class was initiated by Ambassador Agung who successfully reached an agreement to loan gamelan with UArtes in 2022. The Indonesian Ambassador in Quito also routinely sent gamelan maestro, Joko Ngadimin, to teach in the gamelan class.
