VOInews, Jakarta: The National Amil Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) continues to launch various environment-based programs as part of its disaster mitigation efforts and sustainable resource management initiatives. Saidah Sakwan, BAZNAS's Head of Distribution and Utilization, explained several initiatives have been implemented to support communities while preserving environment.

“BAZNAS has undertaken several good practices, such as the Propagation of Microhydro Energy program in Jambi. This program is carried out under strict protocols and is a result of our collaboration with UNDP to provide necessary facilities,” she said during the launch of the Energy Charity 2025 program, initiated by Mosaic (Muslims for Shared Action on Climate Impact) in Jakarta, Wednesday (1/8/205).

Saidah highlighted BAZNAS’s reforestation program, which involves planting mangroves across hundreds of hectares in various regions. This initiative aims to restore coastal ecosystems while strengthening environmental resilience against disasters.

“Another program we are implementing is waste management, which is often based on women’s community groups in villages. We provide facilities and capital to these communities, enabling them to sort and process waste. This activity has become a sustainable livelihood source for rural communities,” she explained.

Beyond environmental programs, BAZNAS is also active in education through initiatives such as Disaster Resilient Villages, Disaster Resilient Schools, and Disaster Resilient Madrasahs. These programs are managed by a dedicated unit within BAZNAS, focused on disaster management and environmental issues.

“Through this unit, we integrate environmental programs as a key component of disaster mitigation while raising public awareness about environmental conservation,” Saidah added.

Saidah expressed hope that these programs will continue to grow and deliver long-term benefits to communities in addressing increasingly complex environmental challenges.
