Minister of Maritime and Fisheries Affairs, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono. (ANTARA/HO-KKP) -

Minister of Maritime and Fisheries Affairs, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, urged the international community to collaborate and bridge the research and technology gap in the global maritime and fisheries sector at the recent South-South Cooperation Forum.

"Indonesia urged countries with advanced fisheries technology to assist the South-South countries by providing research assistance, capability upgrade, and talent development," Trenggono informed in a press release issued by the ministry in Jakarta on Saturday.

He said that at the forum, he urged South-South countries to collaborate for research and technology development, which is essential for harnessing fisheries resources to satisfy the global demand for fish.

Maritime research and technology are also essential to balance ecological protection, maritime environment health, and economic development, he added.

The disparity in global fisheries development has led to countries struggling to satisfy global food demands, he pointed out. The ongoing climate crisis that is affecting the global fisheries industry should prompt the global community to collaborate and address these issues, he added.

To resolve global maritime and fisheries issues, the Indonesian government has pushed for cooperation within the South-South community, he said. Indonesia is also committed to supporting fisheries development, particularly for developing low-carbon and environmentally sustainable fisheries technology, Trenggono added.

"Collaboration among the South-South community is important to address the climate crisis' effect on the global fisheries industry," the minister said.

Besides relying on research and technology, the continuity of measured fishing practice is also essential to achieve proper fisheries resource control and ecological sustainability, he added.

Indonesia recognizes South-South and Triangular Cooperation as an international cooperation platform for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while considering multiple stakeholders' interests.

The South-South and Triangular High-Level Roundtable Meeting took place during the Global Conference on Aquaculture, held from September 22-25, 2021. It was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other international organizations//ANT

The Indonesian National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) dispatched 100 personnel, who served as vaccinators for the COVID-19 Vaccination Regiment, in a bid to support the 20th Papua National Games (PON XX).

Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Inspector General Argo Yuwono, stated that the 100 members of the National Police dispatched to Papua comprised 88 vaccinators and 12 assistants.

"They will be serving in Papua during the PON on October 2-15," Yuwono noted in a written statement received here on Saturday

He explained that the 100 members of the National Police served as additional medical personnel in the Papua PON's venues spread across four districts and cities in Papua Province: Jayapura City, Jayapura District, Mimika District, and Merauke District.

All the additional medical team personnel have already departed from the Soekarno-Hatta Airport aboard flights of several domestic airlines.

"The 100 members have departed from the Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Some have taken flights of the Garuda, Sriwijaya, and Lion Air aircraft. The coordinator for our medical team serving in Papua is Senior Commissioner Budi Heriadi," Yuwono noted.

According to Yuwono, the additional vaccinators sent to Papua are expected to help expedite the administration of the first and second doses of vaccination.

"We are optimistic that the COVID-19 Vaccinator Regiment would work with a sense of responsibility. They should maintain the honor and code of professional ethics, both as a doctor and as a member of the National Police," the former head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police remarked.

The two-star general also reminded the 100 medical personnel of the National Police, who were dispatched, to always increase their vigil against all threats. Moreover, they should synergize with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and other agencies in these activities.

"We are optimistic that they would maintain discipline and obey orders. This means they cannot act outside of the command. I also urge them to look after and protect each other and remind one another of mutual safety," Yuwono added//ANT

Karate team from North Sumatra ready to compete at the XX Papua PON. (ANTARA/HO/rst) -

North Sumatra has set its sights on securing two gold medals in the karate sports branch at the National Games (PON) scheduled on October 11-14, 2021, at the Kayu Batu Aviation Polytechnic GOR, Jayapura City.

North Sumatra's karate coach Delphinus Rumahorbo is optimistic that North Sumatra's karate athletes would be able to win a gold medal for the region at this Papua PON.

"In 2016, at the PON in West Java, we had won two gold. We also aimed for two gold medals in this Papua PON. We would be grateful if we could bring home more medals," Rumahorbo remarked on Saturday.

With eight athletes, Rumahorbo admitted to not only expecting medals from several senior athletes, including Dessyinta, Wan Nurul, and Widodo, who had earlier contested in PON, but also pins hopes of a medal win from young athletes debuting in this Papua PON.

"We are optimistic that our young athletes would surprise us with medals. They have won in the junior category. Despite different pressures and tensions at the PON, so far, we have been training them. For instance, Nicky (Dwi Oktari) has just entered the military, and we hope that her experience can build her fighting spirit,” he stated.

In addition to competing with other karate athletes, Rumahorbo expects North Sumatra's karate athletes to be able to safeguard themselves from conditions outside the competition arena, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and malaria still lingering in Papua.

“I think the athletes have heard more or less about the conditions there. It will certainly have an effect, but we strive to respond to it through training. Hopefully, they will be strong enough," Rumahorbo stated.

At the XX Papua PON, the North Sumatra karate contingent will be strengthened by eight athletes, who will compete in the kumite and kata branches.

The eight athletes include Dessyinta Banurea (+68 kg for women), Gusti Bayu (-75 kg for men), Widodo Febrianto (-84 kg for men), and Daniel (+84 kg for men), Faisal Siahaan (-60 kg male), Nicky Dwi Oktari (-61 kg female), Dwi Fadhilah (-50 kg female) and Wan Nurul Zulfa (-68 kg female)//ANT
