Senior economist Chatib Basri said the leaders of the G20 member countries needed to choose universal issues. In particular, what is being faced by all countries to be discussed at the upcoming November 2022 meeting.

"We understand that there are several related issues that are universal," Chatib told reporters on Monday (5/9/2022). For example, he continued, geopolitical tensions or the narrow personal interests of a country.

Chatib stated that there are two main problems faced by all countries in the world. These include the health crisis due to the spread of Covid-19 and climate change.

"Regarding the climate issue, we can discuss what will be the source of financing in climate finance," he said. For example, matters related to domestic resource management, assistance and the role of the private sector, as well as the role of philanthropic institutions.

According to Chatib, one way that can be done to overcome climate change is the energy transition through green stimulus. Indonesia's G20 presidency also needs to be used as a forum to get out of the COVID-19 storm.

"For example, by reducing fuel subsidies," he said. Chatib believes that it is better to reduce the demand for fossil fuels so that the subsidies can be used to protect vulnerable groups.

This is because countries in the world still want to help vulnerable people in the midst of rising world commodity prices. However, inflation that is too high makes each country have to withdraw the stimulus.

Issues like these can be discussed together in the G20 forum. "We can recalibrate and sit down together to discuss major issues in the world," he said. (RRI)
