PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

The IHS Markit company report shows Indonesia's manufacturing industry is rising from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to their records, this was marked by an increase in Indonesia's manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), in October 2020.

According to the report, Indonesia's manufacturing PMI, in October 2020, was at the level of 47.8. This figure is an increase compared to the PMI in September, which was at the level of 47.2. The increase has caught the attention of the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita.

"Alhamdulillah, although this slight increase is good news, it shows that there is still a high level of trust from industry players. Hopefully, this will be a collective spirit to encourage national economic recovery," said Agus in Jakarta, Tuesday (3/11/2020).

The increase in Indonesia's manufacturing PMI, he continued, at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2020, revived, and became a positive signal for performing the Indonesian economy.

During the pandemic, the manufacturing sector was severely affected by the full implementation of large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) in several areas. Agus expressed his appreciation to several regional governments for easing the PSBB in their regions.

"Apart from being able to support industrial sector activities, these efforts indicate that the spread of the coronavirus has been suppressed," said Agus.

Agus is determined to keep the wheels of the economy moving by ensuring the continuity of operations and mobility of industrial activities.

"By maintaining strict health protocols. With the policy of granting Operational Permits and Industrial Activity Mobility (IOMKI). I am optimistic that people's needs can be met and can prevent massive layoffs," said Agus.

He also emphasized that efforts to increase people's purchasing power are very important because it triggers an increase in the confidence of the expanding industry players.

"We can use November and December as a reference whether the recovery really happened," he said.

This is because, he said, the drop in PMI, in September 2020, rather than the previous month, was due to the industry's lack of trust because they were still very careful in deciding during the Covid-19 pandemic.

IHS Markit Chief Economist, Bernard Aw said, handling the Covid-19 pandemic and the availability of vaccines were the keys to increasing demand in the manufacturing sector the following month. According to him, survey respondents have also shown an increase in costs in production.

"While companies do not have room to increase selling prices in line with weakening purchasing power," said Bernard.

Bernard explained, the price increase occurred in raw materials.

"Such as basic metals, chemicals, plastics, and some foodstuffs, which drive up costs," he said.

However, he continued, the company reduced its selling price.

"It marks the first reduction in the cost of finished goods since March 2020," explained Bernard.

From the businessmen's point of view, they also hope that the pandemic will end soon.

"The main key in efforts to recover the national economy is handling Covid-19. Handling it is not easy, but if the PSBB is implemented again because cases are increasing again, it will be more worrying," said Chairman of the Indonesian Employers' Association (Apindo) Hariyadi Sukamdani.

The generalized system of preference (GSP) facility for Indonesian export products, which has been officially extended by the United States, can be a way to explore negotiations on limited trade agreements (LTD) between the two countries.

The Indonesian Ambassador conveyed this to the United States, Muhammad Lutfi, during a virtual media briefing on Monday night.

"So the LTD (Limited Trade Deal) is the entrance to GSP. Because when you are in GSP, going to the LTD is getting simpler than the negotiations. The parameters are, it will be much easier with the GSP," said Ambassador Lutfi.

According to Lutfi, the government is targeting an increase in the volume of trade between Indonesia and the US to double, or worth $60 billion, in the next five years, which is expected to be achieved through the limited trade agreement (LTD).

In exploring the negotiation of LTD, Lutfi said that his party prioritizes the 575 scheme, which means five main export products, seven potential export products, and five strategic products.

The five main export products are clothing, rubber products, footwear, electronic goods, and furniture.

Meanwhile, seven potential products include wood products, travel goods, chemical products, especially those based on palm oil, jewelry, toys, artificial hair, and paper products.

Machinery, plastic products, automotive spare parts, optical and medical devices, and organic chemical products are the five strategic products that are included in the scheme.

"I feel confident that this 5 7 5 is more practical, makes more sense, and this is not a very difficult process, and we are targeting growth to occur," said Lutfi.

Not only related to trade in goods, he explained that LTD could also open up investment potential in cooperation between the two countries, including in the digital sector, where according to him Indonesia was an attractive market for the US in this field.

"If we open our digital market, we can bring in investment with our digital platform. Our digital market has a very good trend, and we will make our market a world-class market with the hope that there will be improvements in it," he explained.

Previously, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan said that Indonesia would propose the implementation of the Limited Trade Deal (LTD) negotiations between Indonesia and the US, in order to emphasize Indonesia's commitment to continue optimizing the high potential of economic and trade cooperation. both countries.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) stated the importance of transforming Indonesian television broadcasts from analog to digital or analog switch-off (ASO).

KPI Chairman Agung Suprio hopes that by 2022 Indonesian television will switch to digital TV.

"Now we are still using analog TV. In 2022 if nothing gets in the way, we will transform into digital TV," Agung said at the 2020 KPI National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) via Zoom Meeting, Monday.

This program has also been embedded in the Omnibus Law, particularly in the Job Creation law.

Agung said that this transformation is very much needed because it will improve the clarity of Indonesian TV broadcasts and help with the availability of the 5G network.

Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD asked KPI to oversee the deliberation process of the Broadcasting Bill.

The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) is ready to send its volunteers to help victims of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami that affected part of Turkey on Friday (Oct 30).

"Turkey has assisted Indonesia a lot to handle various disasters, ranging from an earthquake and tsunami in Aceh to an earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction in Central Sulawesi. Of course, when Turkey is grieving, PMI is ready to help," PMI Secretary-General Sudirman Said told Antara by phone on Saturday.

Sudirman said PMI and the Turkish Red Crescent which are members of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) will assist each other in handling disasters.

Moreover, the Turkish Red Crescent has frequently extended a large amount of assistance particularly during the earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction recovery period in Central Sulawesi. The largest humanitarian organization in Turkey also contributed to the recovery of victims.

Sudirman said PMI has prepared a number of trained volunteers to help the victims of the quake and tsunami if requested by the Turkish government. The assistance is the manifestation of the longstanding friendship between the two nations.

Earlier, PMI Chief Jusuf Kalla expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the quake that rocked part of Turkey on Friday.

A powerful quake rocked Turkey on Friday. It destroyed scores of buildings and triggered a tsunami that swept through the country's coastal towns. The quake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale was centered 11 miles north of the island of Greek island Samos.

Meanwhile, citing data from the Turkish Disaster Management Agency Authority (AFAD), the Anadolu Agency reported that the quake has claimed 25 lives and left at least 804 persons injured as of early Saturday.

The US government has officially extended the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facilities for 700 Indonesian export products, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a virtual press conference on Sunday.

The US extended the GSP facilities after the US Trade Representative (USTR) had since March 2018 evaluated GSP facilities granted to recipient countries including Indonesia.

"GSP is a trade facility in the form of import duty exemption the US government has granted unilaterally to developing countries in the world since 1974. Indonesia received the GSP facilities from the US for the first time ever in 1980," she said.

She said the Indonesian government has taken proactive steps to follow the process of import duty exemptions at various meetings with the US government representatives, including that with the US Secretary of State Michael Richard Pompeo during his visit to Indonesia in late October 2020.

"Indonesia has always raised the GSP issue at all meetings with the US. During the US Secretary of State's visit to Indonesia three days ago, we discussed again the GSP issue both at the bilateral meeting with me and during a courtesy call on the Indonesian President," she said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Mahendra Siregar said Indonesia will likely be the only Asian country to receive the extension of GSP with reduction or cut from the US.

In the post-evaluation, 3,572 export products have been listed in the 8-digit US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or HS 8-digit receiving the GSP facilities. Of the total, 729 are export products from Indonesia.

"Indonesian export products receiving GSP facilities in 2019 came from 729 products out of 3,572 products receiving the GDP preferential tariff," Retno said.

She noted a rise in the value of Indonesian exports to the US using the GSP facilities this year.

"Indonesia's exports to the US using the GSP facilities from January to August 2020 were valued at US$1.87 billion (nearly Rp27.3 trillion), up 10.6 percent compared to the same period a year earlier,” the minister said.

According to data from the US International Trade Commission (USITC), Indonesia's exports using the GSP facilities to the US last year reached US$2.61 billion (nearly Rp38.2 trillion), or 13.1 percent of Indonesia's total exports to the US standing at US$20.1 billion (about Rp293.86 trillion). President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) denounced French President Emmanuel Macron's statement that insults Islam.

"Indonesia strongly denounces the statement of the French President that has insulted Islam that has hurt the sentiments of Muslims around the world," President Jokowi stated at the Merdeka Palace here on Saturday.

President Jokowi conveyed the statement after meeting with religious leaders in Indonesia, including representatives from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, the Indonesian Church Trustees Conference (KWI), the Indonesian Church Association (PGI), Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI), the Indonesian Buddhist Association (Permabudhi), the Indonesian Confucian Religion Council (Matakin) and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, and Minister of Religious Affairs Fachrul Razi.

"That can create divisions among followers of various religions at a time when the world needs unity to face the COVID-19 pandemic," Jokowi stated.

The head of state believes that freedom of expression that fails to uphold honor, sanctity, and the holiness of religious values and symbols can under no conditions be justified and should be stopped.

"Associating religion with acts of terrorism is a big mistake. Terrorism is terrorism. Terrorists are terrorists. Terrorism has no law with any religion," he noted.

Indonesia also strongly denounced the violence in Paris and Nice.

"Indonesia strongly condemns the violence that occurred in Paris and Nice that claimed lives," the president stated.

Earlier, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry denounced Macron's remarks on Islam and support for depiction and publication of cartoons on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which have sparked much ire in the Islamic World. To register its protest, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry summoned French Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Olivier Chambard, on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, and sought an explanation for Macron's controversial statements.

Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Teuku Faizasyah, told ANTARA here on Wednesday that Ambassador Chambard was summoned to apprise him of Indonesia's official stance on the anti-Islam remarks made by Macron recently in a speech.

The Indonesian government objected to President Macron's comments linking Islam to terrorism or extremism, affirming that associating any religion to acts of terror cannot be justified and would deeply offend adherents of the religions, Faizasyah stated.

Macron's remarks following the beheading of Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher, for showing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad during a class recently have sparked controversy and fueled a backlash from Muslims worldwide over the past few days.(ANTARA)
