On November 26, 2021, more than 80 policy makers, practitioners, experts and scholars from think-tanks and universities, as well as business players from Vietnam and Indonesia gathered to discuss the development of maritime cooperation of both countries and identify potential collaborations in the future. The Roundtable Discussion with the theme “Building Indonesia-Vietnam Maritime Partnership”, which was virtually held in the new Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) building in Hanoi was held in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi, DAV and the Center for Sustainable Ocean Policy – University of Indonesia. In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Mahendra Siregar, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (30/11) emphasized the importance of the relationship between the two countries as the two major countries in Southeast Asia, which represent 45 percent of the ASEAN economy. Indonesia and Vietnam both strive to become strong and prosperous sea-based countries. Meanwhile, Vietnam's Deputy Foreign Minister, Vu Quang Minh in his opening speech emphasized that strengthening the Vietnam-Indonesia strategic partnership is very important for the economic development of each country and for the maintenance of regional peace, stability and prosperity. Vietnam and Indonesia also need to make economic cooperation a driving force in realizing the common goal of overcoming the pandemic and restoring the economy. Deputy Minister Minh also reiterated that maritime cooperation can be developed into one of the main areas of Vietnam and Indonesia's strategic partnership. The close institutional relationship between the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency and the Vietnam Coast Guard is a real example of the strong commitment of the two countries in realizing this mission. In 2021, in the maritime sector, both Indonesia and Vietnam are blessed with abundant marine natural resources. Therefore, both countries must collaborate more closely in ensuring sustainable capture fisheries production from an environmental, economic and social perspective.
