The election of Indonesia as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, United States (US), Friday (8/6) night local time, was happily greeted by President Joko Widodo ( Jokowi). "Alhamdulillah, Indonesia was elected to be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council," wrote President Jokowi through a script he uploaded in his twitter account @jokowi, shortly after the election of Indonesia. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2019-2020, President Jokowi asserted that we (Indonesia, red) will play a world order based on independence, eternal peace, and social justice. As previously reported, Indonesia received 144 votes of 193 votes contested in the election of UN Security Council member (2014-2020) during the UN General Assembly session in New York, United States, Friday (8 / 6). The Indonesian victory was delivered directly by UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak. In addition to Indonesia, the session also elected Belgium, Dominican Republic, South Africa, and Germany as non-permanent members of the UNSC for 2019-2020 periods. Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a statement shortly after the historic event that, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Indonesia will focus on firstly strengthening the ecosystem of peace and global stability. "Indonesia will encourage the dialog culture in conflict resolution. Indonesia also increases the capacity of UN peacekeeping forces including the role of women, "said the Foreign Minister. Secondly, Indonesia will also seek to improve synergy between regional organizations with the UN Security Council in maintaining peace. Third, in facing the international community's joint challenge of terrorism and extremism, Indonesia will encourage the formation of a global comprehensive approach to combating terrorism, radicalism and extremism. Fourthly, Indonesia will also encourage global partnerships to achieve synergy between peace-building and sustainable development activities. A strong global partnership in creating peace, security and stability will certainly contribute to the achievement of the UN development agenda 2030. (setkab.go.id/ES)
