Inauguration of ASEAN Corner at the Oldest University of the Americas

On July 8, 2022, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, the Ambassador of Thailand and the Ambassador of Malaysia who are members of the ASEAN Committee in Lima (ACL) attended the inauguration of the ASEAN Corner.   The unit is located in the Main Library of Pedro Puzen, Campus of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) in Lima City, Peru. UNMSM is a top public college in Peru, and is one of the oldest universities in Latin America, and it was founded in 1551.

The inauguration began with remarks by Head of the Center for Asian Studies, Prof. Carlos Aquino Rodríguez. In his remarks, Prof. Aquino expressed his appreciation to the ACL. He admitted that until now, there are not many Peruvians who know countries in the Southeast Asian region. Therefore, ASEAN Corner is expected to increase Peruvians’ knowledge about countries in the Southeast Asian region.

Meanwhile, Thai Ambassador Sorayut Chasombat as Chairman of the ACL hopes that the availability of literature at ASEAN and its member states can bring Peru closer to ASEAN, increase various cooperation, especially in the field of education between Peru and ASEAN, as well as Peru and Thailand, Peru and Indonesia, and Peru and Malaysia separately.

Today, there are about 96 books and magazines about ASEAN and its member states.  The Indonesian Embassy in Lima also contributed 17 books on Indonesian cultural arts, the potential of Indonesian tourism destinations, a Spanish-Indonesian dictionary, the advantages of Indonesian coffee, Belleza Indonesia Magazine published by the Indonesian Embassy in Lima.

The UNMSM Center for Asian Studies, which was founded in 2018, is the only Center for Asian Studies in the South American region. Although it is only entering its fourth year, UNMSM's Center for Asian Studies has made a lot of cooperation in the field of education with universities in Japan, South Korea, the People's Republic of China and India. The institute also seeks to develop educational cooperation with universities in ASEAN countries, in particular with Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand which have diplomatic representation in Peru.
