Indonesia Makes Preparation Before Officially Sitting at the UN Security Council Nonpermanent Member

Indonesia was successfully elected as the UN Security Council non permanent member for 2019-2020 period after gaining 144 votes at the UN Security Council General Assembly last June. Before officially sit as the nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council on January 1st, 2019, Indonesia has made special preparation that consist of training for representative or staff that will be place in the bilateral meetings with several countries, including other countries which were elected as the non permanent member of UN Security Council 2019-2020.  As October 1st, Indonesia will sit as an observer at the council. It was stated by Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi through a press release received by Voice of Indonesia on Wednesday Sept. 26th in Jakarta.

 

"We are in preparation to be the non permanent member of UN security council, but from October the first we will be an observer first. It means we don’t join the voting session. There are many things to do for the preparation including trainings, and we also meet some countries in the council or that will join the council such as South Africa, Belgium, Germany and Dominica. I and Germany minister have met to discuss the migrant issues but in a UN context we want to develop the partnership to multilateralism. So the process is still running," Retno Marsudi said.

 

Retno Marsudi and Foreign Minister of Germany, Heiko Mass had held a bilateral meeting during the Bali Democracy Forum chapter Berlin that was held on September 14th. During the meeting the two ministers agreed to bring peace and world security to be the main focus on the UN Security Council. Therefore, Indonesia and German have determined to strengthen global ecosystem for world peace and security. Both ministers also agreed to add the agreement between the UN Security Council members state and all countries in many levels, and have a regular consultation to handle several issues in the world//trans: NK
