VOInews, Hong Kong: The 2024 Indonesian general election voting through polling stations for the Hong Kong and Macau regions of China officially closed on Tuesday night (13/2/2024). The polling stations closed at 19.00 local time.

Chairman of the overseas election committee of Hong Kong and Macau for the 2024 election, Agustinus Guntoro, in a press conference after the vote closure said that the turnout of Indonesian citizens in both regions in this elections increased. Thereby, its turnout recorded a new history throughout all Indonesian elections held in Hong Kong and Macau.

"In this election, it (voter turnout) increased by more than 62.88% compared to the previous election, from 46,491 to more than 75,000 voters to date. Of course, it needs to be underlined that this is a record in the history of (Indonesian) elections in Hong Kong and Macau. This is also to answer news that the election in Hong Kong and Macau failed because as many as 70,000 voters did not get their voting rights. However, with these records and data, we answer that the turnout is high," Agustinus explained.

Agustinus added that this time's election were held differently from previous elections, due to local government policies and the limited capacity of the facilities and infrastructure of the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong. According to him, based on reality and based on input from the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU), the polling stations, which were originally planned to be 31 for the Hong Kong and Macau regions, were decided to become four.
