It can be said that Indonesia has succeeded in running the 2024 General Election series safely, smoothly, and conducive. The peaceful and conducive atmosphere post-election proves that Indonesia can maintain its honor as a democratic country. Of course, it cannot be separated from the role of all parties involved in implementing the election.
One of the roles in fostering peaceful elections is the press coverage. The press has an important role in guarding elections by providing objective coverage, in terms of monitoring the election process, fraud or violations check, while providing information to the public about candidates and their political platforms. The press is also responsible for providing accurate and balanced information to voters so that they can make rational decisions.
At the National Mass Media Convention held in the context of 2024 Indonesian National Press Day in Jakarta on Monday (19/02/2024), Secretary Assistant for the Government of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Sigit Wijatmoko stated that the press plays an important role in guarding democracy and leadership transition through presenting accurate and objective information. He also viewed that the media and all members of the press are expected to be able to provide credible information and be responsible for disseminating various government programs and channeling people's aspirations as well.
The press is required to remain independent and objective. The spirit of independence is important considering it is the fourth pillar of democracy. The press as a medium for information, education, entertainment, and social control is, of course, very much needed in social life.
