VOINews, Rusia: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has emphasized Russia's support for ASEAN to reinforce its role as a cornerstone of stability and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
"We firmly believe that an ASEAN-centric architecture, based on inclusiveness and equality, respect for each member's interests, and recognition of their identities, must remain the foundation of security and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific," Lavrov stated, according to a press release from the Russian Embassy in Jakarta on Saturday.
During the ASEAN-Russia Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Vientiane, Laos, on Friday, Lavrov noted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of Russia's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and the fifth year of the implementation of the Russia-ASEAN Strategic Partnership.
Lavrov also expressed appreciation for the "digital partner" status that ASEAN conferred on Russia last year. This status underscores the deepening technological cooperation between the two sides.
He highlighted the ongoing positive dynamics in practical areas such as economy, energy, agriculture, and education, as well as the strengthening political and security coordination to address common issues and threats. Lavrov affirmed, "Our relations have become increasingly comprehensive over the past three decades."
Lavrov reiterated Russia's commitment to upholding the principles of the Treaty and contributing to maintaining stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region. This dedication reflects Russia's long-term strategy to be a reliable partner in the region.
Furthermore, the Russian Foreign Minister acknowledged the shared perspectives with ASEAN counterparts regarding the growing influence and power of Global South countries in international organizations. This development reflects the increasing significance of these nations in global economic and political affairs.
During the meeting, Lavrov commended Cambodia for its effective role as the coordinator of the Russia-ASEAN dialogue over the past three years. He recognized Cambodia's efforts in facilitating dialogue and cooperation.
Lavrov also welcomed the participation of Timor-Leste representatives as the newest regular attendees in the ASEAN-Russia agenda, expressing hope for the successful completion of Timor-Leste's accession process to become a full ASEAN member. This inclusion is seen as a positive step towards regional integration and cooperation./Antara/VOI
