VOINews, Paris: The Paris 2024 Olympics officially commenced with an unprecedented historic parade where 7,000 athletes paraded on the Seine River aboard boats, passing by historic monuments in the French capital on Friday evening (26/7).
As reported by Antara, For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony was held outside the main stadium, with approximately 300,000 people watching from specially built stands along the riverbanks, and another 200,000 from balconies and apartments overlooking the river, according to AFP.
As tradition dictates, the Greek delegation had the honor of leading the fleet, paying homage to the birthplace of the Olympics.
The athletes sailed down the river in a fleet of 85 boats, despite threats of terrorism through high-speed train sabotage and the risk of heavy rain as forecasted. The show combined French culture and history with significant moments from past Olympics, while American pop star Lady Gaga dazzled the VIPs and spectators with her early performance in the ceremony.
Olympics organizer Tony Estanguet stated before the show that there would be some modifications if it rained, but he emphasized that the weather would not dampen the spirit.
"It will be a beautiful moment, it will be a big party," he added.
NBA star LeBron James, who will be one of the flag bearers for Team USA alongside American tennis star Coco Gauff, was seen wearing a clear plastic poncho to protect himself from the rain before the team boarded the boat.
Approximately 3,000 dancers will perform from the riverbanks and monuments, including the Notre-Dame Cathedral, in a show that will promote diversity, gender equality, and French history.
The landmarks and architecture of the City of Light will serve as the backdrop for both the opening ceremony and many of the subsequent sports competitions.
Paris envisions hosting a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly Olympics compared to previous editions, with competitions taking place at historic sites around the capital./Antara/VOI
