VOInews, Jakarta: Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, has called on the public to safeguard the integrity of information and maintain unity amidst the ongoing discussions on the Regional Election Bill (RUU Pilkada) in the House of Representatives (DPR).
The Minister emphasized that the government fully respects the political process currently underway. In his statement in Jakarta on Thursday, August 22, 2024, Budi Arie Setiadi urged that public discourse be utilized constructively. He cautioned, "We must ensure that the dynamics surrounding the regional elections do not give rise to disinformation, slander, or violence that could harm the public interest. We all stand to lose if that happens," Budi warned.
The Minister noted that the maturity of the Indonesian nation is reflected in how the public handles differing opinions. He added, "Let's preserve our unity and cohesion. I am confident that a positive outcome will be achieved for all parties involved," emphasizing the importance of democratic attitudes and maintaining unity amid differences.
According to Budi Arie, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to adhere to the existing regulations regarding the 2024 regional elections. He explained that since the DPR has not yet passed the Regional Election Bill, the Constitutional Court's ruling will take effect if the bill is not approved by August 27, 2024. "The government will only abide by and adhere to the prevailing regulations," he affirmed.
The Minister also highlighted the need for a wise approach in dealing with the developments following the Constitutional Court's decision and the ongoing discussions in the House of Representatives.
He expressed hope that the 2024 regional elections would be conducted in a democratic, peaceful, and secure manner. The simultaneous elections are scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, 2024, in 37 provinces and 508 regencies/cities. The government calls on all parties to support this process in a positive and constructive way.
