A member of the House of Representatives –DPR's Commission 1, Arief Suditomo views that the government should be able to issue regulations that can protect the public in using the internet. This was disclosed at a panel discussion themed ‘Healthy Climate of Using Media, Maintaining the Existence of National Mass Media in Global Information Landscape’ that took place in Padang, West Sumatra on Thursday (8/2). He also said that the government has the authority to issue regulations that will protect the public using internet services. The regulations are expected to be issued in a short time without going through parliamentary discussions.

“…In this situation, I want to offer a solution in which the government in this situation can take a significant role. For example, when we actually collide with an over-the-top situation, this should be tackled as soon as possible. The government should make a ministerial regulation or Government’s Decree (PP) that can be basically issued more quickly, " Arief said. 

 

Arief Suditomo further expressed his hope to the media association, especially the online media to be able to contribute in formulating regulations to protect the internet user community. The contribution is expected to be made not only for the interests of the media associations but also for the protection of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. (Ndy/Trans by Rhm)
