The Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences-LIPI commemorates its 113th anniversary. With a long history, the LIPI Research Center for Oceanography has contributed to the national development, particularly in the field of marine science and technology. Head of the LIPI Research Center for Oceanography, Dr Dirhamsyah, on Tuesday 20/2 in Jakarta, after opening Oceanography Science Week 2018 said the center is targeting to build a national data center.
"We hoped to be an embryo from the national oceanographic data center. During the time Indonesia has not had a formal marine data center. We will start for that and our target in 2019 or 2020 we will appear with a building which is specifically built for national data center," Dirhamsyah said.
Dirhamsyah further explained, in the year 2019 he also targets to have data of coral reefs and seaweed throughout Indonesia, because so far, there has not been a complete data about the status of coral reefs and seaweed in the country. The data is very useful not only science but also for making a decision. The data can also be useful for policy making in the field of tourism in effort of coral reef transplantion and so forth. LIPI also has a very important physics oceanography data for marine safet. (VOI/Sekar/NT)
