The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo reminded that urban population growth throughout the world continues to increase, so urban planning in the New Urban Agenda is very important.
Joko Widodo said this when he opened a virtual World Habitat Day commemoration which was held at the Surabaya City Hall, East Java, Monday night (5/10).
According to the President, if not seriously prepared, the rapid growth of the community could trigger various problems.
Conversely, if handled properly, urbanization can be an opportunity for the progress of the nation.
"If not prepared seriously, the rapid growth of the community can trigger problems, ranging from problems of density and poverty, environmental problems and availability of public space, the availability of basic infrastructure, especially clean water and sanitation, including housing problems and various other urban problems,"
"However, if we handle it well, I believe that urbanization can be a tremendous opportunity for the progress of the nation. It can become a center for creativity and innovation, can spur economic growth, and improve the quality of life and welfare of its citizens,"
President Joko Widodo reminded that 55 percent of the world's population lives in cities. In 2050, the number will increase to 68 percent. The highest rate of increase occurred on the continents of Asia and Africa.
The President said the commitment to the new urban agenda or "New Urban Agenda" in 2036 could not be postponed any longer.
Commemoration of World Habitat Day 2020 with the theme "Housing for All, a Better Urban Future", was attended by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif and the Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini. VOI)
