The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) stated the importance of transforming Indonesian television broadcasts from analog to digital or analog switch-off (ASO).

KPI Chairman Agung Suprio hopes that by 2022 Indonesian television will switch to digital TV.

"Now we are still using analog TV. In 2022 if nothing gets in the way, we will transform into digital TV," Agung said at the 2020 KPI National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) via Zoom Meeting, Monday.

This program has also been embedded in the Omnibus Law, particularly in the Job Creation law.

"The law states in one of its articles regarding ASO procurement in 2022," Agung said.

Agung said that this transformation is very much needed because it will improve the clarity of Indonesian TV broadcasts and help with the availability of the 5G network.

"With ASO, Indonesia will have a digital bonus for the internet. Our nation is very behind in terms of technology because we have not been ASO for a long time," Agung said.

In addition, compared to neighboring countries, the current technological developments in Indonesia
left behind.

"Many other countries have 5G, while we are still 4G. I hope that in 2022, we can have ASO," Agung added.

Agung also touched on the ratification of the Revision of the Broadcasting Law. He hopes that legislators will immediately pass the regulation to facilitate monitoring of broadcast content.

"Overseeing conventional broadcasting content when it is digital and monitoring new media. We hope that they will pass the law in 2021," he said.

Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD asked KPI to oversee the deliberation process of the Broadcasting Bill.

"I hope KPI will continue to oversee the revision process of the Broadcasting Bill, which is still being discussed at the House of Representatives, so the government can carry out its duties in Broadcasting," Mahfud said virtually in Jakarta, Monday.

The Central KPI Rakornas was also attended by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Chair of the COVID-19 Handling Task Force Doni Monardo, Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian Parliament Meutya Hafid, and Chair of the LKBN Supervisory Board of ANTARA, Widodo Muktiyo.
