Beras Basah is a small island located in the Makassar Strait. Administratively, this island is included in the area of Bontang City, East Kalimantan. This beautiful island is now a destination for diving and snorkeling lovers. The fastest access to reach this island is via the Badak NGL pier by using a speedboat about 15 minutes. Another access is via Tanjung Limau Pier and Tanjung Laut Bontang City by using a motorized boat approximately one hour.

The name Beras Basah in English means Wet Rice. According to the local folklore, a long time ago, there was a ship belonging to the Kutai Sultanate that was sailing in the Makassar Strait. The ship was carrying food; one of which was rice. Then, the ship sank when hit by a big wave and spilled its baggage. Because the sea where the ship sank was shallow, the ship's cargo, which was mostly rice, did not sink, but some appeared like a mound. Over time, the mound of rice turned into a white sandy island like rice, which is always wet because it is surrounded by the ocean.

Beras Basah Island, which is located in the middle of the sea, used to have an area of approximately 5 hectares. Because it has been eroded by sea water, the island is now only about 2 hectares wide. But its beauty is unquestionable. The beach is clean and it has white sand with sea water, which is clear turquoise, adding coconut trees scattered in several places to provide shade. This area is comfortable for relaxing. In addition, on this island, there are also gazebos, changing rooms, toilets and stalls. On the island of Beras Basah, you can also play with banana boats and other activities. If you like the beauty of the sea, you can try diving and snorkeling. You can also walk along the beach and if you are lucky, you can find marine animals, such as sea urchins, squid and sea cucumbers.

Written by
Published in Indonesian Wonder

Every region in Indonesia has its own special cuisine. For example, the Magelang area of Central Java has many special foods; one of which is Senerek soup. This soup is a typical one of Magelang, Central Java. Supposedly, this soup was adapted from Dutch cuisine. Senerek comes from the Dutch vocabulary, namely 'Snert' which means pea soup. In the past, the Dutch soldiers often cooked 'Snert Soup’ in Magelang . However, because the tongue of the local community has difficulty pronouncing snert, the term Senerek was created.

In addition to peas, Senerek soup consists of pieces of beef or chicken, carrots, and celery leaves which are then mixed with broth. This food is served in various versions; there is a clear soup but there is also a thick one. When eaten, this soup tastes so savory and delicious with the inherent aroma of pepper. Senerek soup is more delicious when eaten with warm rice. In addition, this soup will be even more delicious if enjoyed with side dishes, such as tempeh, tofu, meat perkedel or potato cake, and prawn Bakwan.

This soup is very rich in nourishment because it uses beef and broth, and then added with peas which are full of protein and carrots and tomatoes which are rich in vitamins. This soup is suitable for maintaining body stamina. If you are interested in tasting Senerek soup, this typical food is widely sold in food stalls in Magelang City with the price ranging from Rp. 15,000 to Rp. 20,000 per serving.

Trenggalek, a regency in East Java is located on the southern coast of Java Island. The topography of the Trenggalek area is identical to the mountains; one of them is in the Bendungan sub-district, northern area of Trenggalek City. The majority of the people in the sub-district work as farmers. To speed up the work and avoid the heat, they come to the fields as early as possible. The situation has made the housewives creative in preparing fast and delicious lunch. Thus, the idea of making so-called ‘Sego Gegog’ is made.

The name Sego Gegog is an acronym for “Sego Genem Godhong Gedhang” which means rice punel (fluffy and lumpy rice) that is wrapped in banana leaves. In a packet of Gegog rice, there is white rice and its side dish, namely anchovy sauce with a mixture of small tempeh slices. Besides anchovies, there are also people who use tuna and gizzard. Initially, the rice is half cooked, then it is wrapped in banana leaves with the side dish. Afterwards, it is steamed until cooked. Nasi Gegok is wrapped in small pieces. With a small portion, one person can spend 2 to 3 packs of Gegog rice.

When it is eaten, you will immediately smell the aroma of banana leaves. This typical food of Trenggalek is even more delicious, when it is combined with the spicy taste of the side dishes. Usually, the stalls selling this dish also sell fried side dishes, such as fried tempeh, fried tofu and many others. The Gegog rice can be enjoyed at food stalls in Trenggalek sub-district. But if you want to enjoy Gegog rice with an original taste, you can also try it in the Bendungan sub-district. The price of Sego Gegog is from Rp 3000 to Rp 5000/portion.

The Roah Segare Tradition is a form of gratitude to the God for the fishing community at Kuranji Dalang Village due to  abundant marine products. The Roah Segare is held every Muharram month in the Hijri calendar. They have carried out this tradition from generation to generation until now in a bid to avoid all kinds of calamities.

The Roah Segare procession begins with the recitation of BarzanjiSelakaran (doing dhikr and sholawat of the Prophet Muhammad together, while standing, and forming a circle), and also a prayer to AllahThen, it is continued by praying for Dulang Penamat (offerings) to be taken to the beach. The Dulang is then thrown into the sea. The floating process is a symbol of the fishing community's gratitude for the abundant marine products. In this tradition, there are several customary provisions that must be carried out. For example, fishermen are not allowed to go to sea to look for fish for three days after the Roah Segare ritual takes placeThis is intended to give the sea time to recover for a moment, after all this time being taken by fishermen. If this rule is violated, the local community believes, fishermen will get into troubleAfter three days, fishermen can go to sea with new hope and enthusiasm, namely to get an abundant catch.

After the procession is completed, the community and guests are served with the food that has been prayed for. They do the Begibung tradition or eat together in one large container or tray. Eating together is a form of togetherness and kinship for the fishermen on Kuranji Beach. Roah Segare is now not just a tradition. This tradition of Lombok people continues to be carried out and developed as one of the tourism icons in West Lombok.
