Indo-Pacific concept that Indonesia has introduced to several countries will be one of the topics discussed during the bilateral meeting between Indonesian President JokoWidodo and Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi on Thursday, May 30th in Jakarta. Both countries share similarities in the Indo-Pacific concept. This was conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia to journalist after the breaking the fast together with ambassadors of friendly countries on Monday, May 28.

Indo-Pacific, we will continue our communication. The President informed PM Modi in January, and then afterwards there was some communication. So in principle we do not see any differences in the concept of the Indo-Pacific problem and I think in the meeting Indo-Pacific will also be discussed” Retno Marsudi said.

Indo-Pacific has become one of the agenda to strengthen Indonesia's foreign policy in 2018. The Indo-Pacific concept has been echoed since 2013, and Indonesia focuses on potentials in the Indian Ocean. There are three principles of cooperation in the Indonesia’s Indo-Pacific concept, namely transparent, open and inclusive cooperation in accordance with international law. Indonesia still wants to use ASEAN as the centrality that builds this Indo-Pacific architecture. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi came to Indonesia for an official visit to meet President Joko Widodo at Merdeka Palace on Wednesday (30/5). Prime Minister Modi was greeted with a state ceremony and continued on veranda talk, then bilateral meeting between the two countries’ delegates. In the statement during a joint press conference, President Joko Widodo revealed that Indonesia and India agreed to enhance strategic partnership into a comprehensive strategic partnership. With a comprehensive strategic partnership, the President believes the bilateral relations between the two countries will be stronger and better.


The robustness of this relationship not only brings benefits to the people of both countries, but also to the stability and prosperity of the region. In 2019, Indonesia and India will celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations and various activities will be carried out to bring our society closer. Indonesia is ready to forge closer, better, and stronger cooperation with India” President Joko Widodo said.



Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi in his statement said that India and Indonesia have to establish basic cooperation of Indo Pacific, because as a strategic partner, Indonesia and India together with other countries in Indo Pacific region is responsible for ensuring security in the Maritime region
. As for from bilateral meetings between the Indonesian and Indian delegations, cooperation was established, including cooperation in the field of defense, the framework of agreement between the Indonesian and Indian governments on the cooperation of exploration and use of space for peaceful purposes, and Memorandum of Understanding on technical cooperation in the sector the railway between the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Railways of the Republic of India. Religious attractions, such as ancient mosques, are available, and some religious activities are also held at the mosque at a certain time. The Ancient Mosque of Limo Kaum, Rao Rao Mosque in Tarab River, Sa`adah Desert Mosque, Ishlah Pariangan Mosque, and Surau Lubuak Bauk in Batipuah are some of the ancient places of worship that can be visited. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, conducts his state visit to Indonesia on 29-31 May, 2018. On May 30, the Prime Minister will have among others bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and meeting with business community and Indian people in Indonesia. The Prime Minister will also discuss Indonesia’s target to increase the number of Indian tourists to Indonesia which reaches 40% or 700,000 tourists. India appreciates Garuda Indonesia airlines which will begin its direct flight from Denpasar, Bali and Mumbai.

“This year Indonesia tourism has created a very ambitious target. I understand the target is to grow Indian tourists to Indonesia by 40% to reach 700 thousands. And very important statement is the direct channel endeavored by Garuda Indonesia. They are starting the direct flight connecting Denpasar Bali to Mumbai. And that is a very successful connection,” Ambassador of India to Indonesia, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, said in a press conference on the visit of Indian Prime Minister in Jakarta on Monday (28/05).

Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat added until now, good cooperation in the sector of energy and solar energy has been established between Indonesia and India. It is one of the reasons of the harmonious relation between Indonesia and India. (VOI/EGI/TRANS-YATI/AHM)
