State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

Indonesia's economy continued to shrink at 0.74 percent year-on-year (yoy) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021, according to the Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

"Economic growth in the first quarter of 2021 contracted by 0.74 percent," BPS Head Suhariyanto stated here on Wednesday.

Suhariyanto attributed the improvement in growth to an upward trend since the GDP contracted 5.32 percent in the second quarter of 2020.

"In comparison with the previous quarter, this shows a significant improvement. The contraction of 0.74 percent shows signs of increasingly concrete economic recovery," he remarked.

Moreover, it was slightly better than the government's earlier projection in the range of 0.5 percent to 0.3 percent.

Despite the contraction, the country enjoyed signs of economic recovery in the first quarter of 2021, such as an improvement in the Retail Sales Index, Consumer Confidence Index, and manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index.

A rise in car sales, electricity consumption, and cement production also offered a positive impetus to Indonesia's economic recovery.

The government is optimistic that Indonesia's economic performance would continue to increase and grow at a high rate of 4.5 percent-5.3 percent by the end of 2021.

However, to achieve this figure, the economy in the second quarter of 2021 must start to grow positively in the range of 6.9 percent-7.8 percent.

The government believes that positive economic growth can be attained through the state budget stimulus programs, acceleration of the vaccination program, and consistent implementation of health protocols.

Furthermore, the government will encourage the strengthening of local industries in various key strategic fields, such as palm oil, chemicals, aluminum, electronics, and footwear to help boost the economy.

The BPS earlier recorded that Indonesia's economy had contracted by 2.07 percent (yoy) in 2020.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started to impact the economy, Indonesia's economic growth had slowed down to 2.97 percent in the first quarter of 2020, as compared to some five percent (yoy) in normal conditions. (Antaranews)

The government took the decision to increase the ceiling of non-collateral smallholder business credits (KUR) to Rp100 million, from Rp50 million earlier.

"The government has approved several changes in KUR policies, including a change in the scheme of non-collateral KUR, to a maximum of Rp100 million, from Rp50 million earlier," Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto noted in a written statement released on Tuesday.

The non-collateral KUR, with an upper limit of Rp100 million, can be utilized for small KUR. The recipients of small KUR can become participants of the Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) in accordance with Presidential Instruction No. 2 of 2021.

The government has additionally decided to raise special KUR allocations for micro, small, and medium industries or other productive sectors that can be developed into special KUR.

Under the earlier rules, special KUR was particularly intended for smallholder plantation, smallholder husbandry, and smallholder fishery commodities.

The government, through the Committee of Financing Policies for MSMEs, has also decided to increase the KUR interest subsidy to three percent for a period of six months until the end of 2021.

Hence, the government has allocated Rp4.39 trillion to meet the total requirements for KUR interest subsidy for 2021 at Rp7.84 trillion.

With several changes in policies, the government has decided to raise the ceiling of non-collateral KUR to Rp285 trillion, from Rp253 trillion earlier. (Antaranews)

Indonesian President Joko Widodo held a limited meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday to discuss the development of swallow’s nests and porang plant cultivation.

While delivering an online press statement after the meeting, Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo stated that swallow’s nests and porang plants are commodities of Indonesia's future.

“Recently, we attended a limited meeting on two things. The first was related to swallow's nests, and the second was related to the porang plant, both of which are Indonesia's mainstay, Indonesia's future commodity," Limpo said at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Minister of Agriculture added that he would make maximum efforts to cultivate the two commodities and develop the downstream sector as well as promote their further processing and export.

"Further processing (will be taken up) with the Minister of Industry, and the market place regarding trade, including exports, with the Minister of Trade," he informed.

Porang plants, which enjoy a global demand, can potentially be cultivated almost anywhere in Indonesia, he said.
“Swallow's nests are like that (too). Therefore, we will develop it, accelerate more strongly from upstream to downstream," he added.

The government will first provide assistance in the form of technical guidance to porang and swallow's nest farmers, he said. Then, the regional and producer groupings will be carried out, he disclosed.

"For swallow's nests, it (the support) relates to the swallow houses, the initial process to the industrial process," he said.

The minister said he has conveyed the President's direction to all stakeholders so that regulations can be simplified at all levels. (Antaranews)a

"It is our wish that our CPMI are also given priority for receiving vaccines. They are a vulnerable group because they will soon be deployed abroad," Minister Fauziyah remarked while reviewing worker vaccinations held at the Ministry of Manpower office, Jakarta, Tuesday.

In addition to prospective Indonesian workers (TKI), Minister Fauziyah highlighted the need for prospective apprentices, who will be placed abroad, to become a priority for recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In a series of vaccination programs targeting 800 workers, the Ministry of Manpower aims to vaccinate trade union members and laborers, prospective Indonesian migrant workers, and apprentices departing the country.

The program was implemented as part of the commemoration of Labor Day or May Day 2021 and part of the government’s steps to deal with COVID-19 and its impact on the health and labor sectors.

"Hence, we are grateful to the CPMI to get priority to receive vaccines. God willing, with the confidence of their friends, the CPMI will be well-received in placement countries," the minister stated, adding that the CPMI vaccination would continue.

On the occasion, Fauziyah reminded hundreds of workers administered vaccination to maintain health protocols despite having received the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has stressed on the need for changing public behavior and implementing better strategies to manage Indonesia’s waste problem.

“(Our) Waste problem is indeed extraordinary (complicated). Every day we produce waste. In one day, the assumed waste production in big cities is 0.7 kg per person. Meanwhile, the assumed waste production in small cities is usually 0.5 kg per person," director general of waste and B3 (hazardous and toxic materials) management at the ministry, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, told the press at the opening of the 2021 National Waste Care Virtual Festival here on Monday.

Waste production by the community involves throwing away leftovers and single-use plastic bags, which, in turn, contribute to the growing pile of waste, she observed.

That fact further emphasizes the importance of better waste management, because most of the landfills in Indonesia still use an open dumping system without any treatment at all, she said.

“Others (trash) are dumped into the neighborhood illegally," she added.

The director general then emphasized the need for educating and raising awareness among the people so that they can change such habits.

During the event, the ministry's waste management director, Novrizal Tahar, said the 2021 National Garbage Care Festival is being held virtually to showcase the various achievements made in waste management in Indonesia.

The achievements include the formation of waste banks by communities, and waste reduction carried out by producers and various other parties, which are expected to serve as examples in increasing waste management capacity, he informed.

The government is targeting to achieve a waste management capacity of up to 100 percent by 2025, 30 percent in waste reduction and 70 percent in handling, Tahar said.

“This (virtual event) is also an effort to share knowledge, so that success stories in other places can be transmitted quickly to other areas," he added. (Antaranews)

Mounting COVID-19 cases have dashed the prospects of global economic recovery in several nations, according to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, concurrently the Financial System Stability Committee chairperson.

"Concerns ride high about global economic recovery continuing to be shadowed by the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases on the global scale as well, especially in several countries covered by the press," Indrawati stated during the Committee's press conference, here on Monday.

The minister expounded that the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in scores of countries will cast a shadow and pose downside risks to the global economic growth that had actually seen a positive increase.

Indrawati believed that the global economic trend had continued to strengthen since the start of 2021, mirrored by an increase in the global trade volume and commodity prices, among other factors.

Furthermore, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised the projection of global economic growth, from 5.5 percent to six percent.

On the other hand, the minister believes that the progress in global vaccination in several developed countries will drive optimism over economic recovery.

"The progress of global vaccination campaigns in several countries speeds up optimism about recovery," she stated. (Antaranews)

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin confirmed the entry of three new coronavirus variants into Indonesia, including those originating from India, South Africa, and Great Britain.

"It has been reported to the president that new mutations (of the coronavirus) have entered (Indonesia), including the mutation from India for which we have seen two incidents and both were in Jakarta, and one incident involving the South African variant found in Bali," Sadikin noted at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

"Apart from the Britain variant, for which we have found 13 cases, two cases involving the Indian strain and one case involving the strain from South Africa were also detected," he revealed.

The mutated coronavirus strain first found in Britain was named B117, while the variant initially found in India was identified as B1617, and the mutated strain from South Africa was named B1351.

The minister remarked that the new coronavirus mutants are listed under the "variant of concern" category, highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"We need to manage this on account of the fact that the number is still small, as they can spread rapidly due to their higher infection rate as compared to other variants," he stated.

Isolation measures should soon be applied by those having contracted the new coronavirus strains, and those who came in contact with them should be traced and examined at the earliest, he stated.

The minister also recapped the criticality of applying health protocols to contain the transmission of COVID-19.

"It is of utmost importance to wear a mask, wash your hands, and maintain distance. Whatever the virus or the strain is, if we are disciplined in implementing health protocols, infections should be averted," he stated.

"To this end, I will continue to reiterate that health protocols should be followed by all of us, everywhere we are," the minister emphasized. (Antaranews)
