PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

The Health Ministry has appealed to people to not be “picky” about the COVID-19 vaccines offered by the government, saying the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared all currently authorized and recommended vaccines safe.

"So, there is no reason for the public to hesitate to participate in the vaccination program," Siti Nadia Tarmizi, spokesperson for the ministry, said here on Tuesday.

To vaccinate the targeted 181 million recipients under the national program, the government will require around 426 million vaccine doses, she pointed out.

The huge number of vaccine doses cannot be supplied by just one vaccine manufacturer, she said. In fact, countries around the world have been competing fiercely to secure vaccine supplies for their populations, she added.

"At first, Indonesia received the Sinovac vaccine, then at the end of March and early April, 2021, we had the AstraZeneca vaccine, and in June or July, 2021, other vaccines are scheduled to arrive, (which) include Novavax and Pfizer," she noted.

The government is calling all vaccines as COVID-19 vaccines, so that they are no longer identified on the basis of producers, Tarmizi said.

"We call all of these (vaccines received by the country as) COVID-19 vaccines," she stated.

The WHO has found the AstraZeneca vaccine safe and effective in protecting people from the very serious risks posed by COVID-19, including death, hospitalization, and serious illness, she pointed out.

Carrying out vaccinations is currently crucial as the government is trying to achieve herd immunity, she said.

"People should not hesitate to join the vaccination program. The benefits of the vaccination program far outweigh the risks," she asserted.

More than 13 million people have received their first vaccine shots and over nine million have received their second vaccine dose so far in the country, as per government data. (Antaranews)

Joining in the global outpouring of support for Palestine, several hundred Indonesians staged a peaceful rally in front of the US embassy here on Tuesday, demanding an end to Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.

Recent Israeli actions in Palestine have triggered a rash of protests around the world in the past week.

Initiated by the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), Tuesday's rally called on US President Joe Biden to take immediate steps to end the "Israeli brutality” that has been responsible for the deaths of almost 200 Palestinians, including women and children.

The demonstration initiated by the KSPI was not only joined by labor unionists and workers, but also drew university students, youths, and members of multi-faith communities.

Sariat Arifia, an activist with the Al Azhar Solidarity for Palestine, told ANTARA that he joined the rally in front of the US embassy compound in Central Jakarta because it was a democratic way to fulfill the mandate of the Preamble to Indonesia's 1945 Constitution.

According to the Preamble, "freedom is the inalienable right of all nations so that colonialism must be abolished in this world as it is not in conformity with humanity and justice”, he pointed out.

Thus, Indonesia must contribute to the abolishment of colonialism in the world as part of collective endeavors to establish a world order based on freedom, abiding peace, and social justice, Arifia asserted.

What happens on the Gaza Strip and other parts of the Palestinian motherland is closely related to acts of Israel's colonialism, he remarked.

He further argued that apart from the fact that Palestine was among the first few nations to recognize Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945, erstwhile President Soekarno has set down how Indonesia must respond to the Palestinian issue.

"As long as the freedom of Palestine is yet to be returned to the Palestinians, Indonesia will forever stand in defiance against the occupation by Israel," Arifia quoted Soekarno as saying.

The Israel-Palestine conflict recently grabbed international headlines again after Israeli forces raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the final days of the holy month of Ramadhan and launched airstrikes on Gaza.

According to Al Jazeera, prior to Israel's bombing of the besieged Gaza Strip, Israeli security personnel attacked worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque with "rubber-coated steel rounds, stun grenades, and tear gas”.

The raid was triggered by what Al Jazeera described as the Jewish government's plans to "forcefully expel Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem to make way for Israeli settlers".

Indonesian President Joko Widodo vociferously denounced the use of force against Palestinian worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is considered the third-holiest site by Muslims after Mecca and Medina. He also slammed the forced eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah.

"The forced evictions of Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, and the use of force against Palestinian civilians at Al-Aqsa Mosque should not be ignored. Indonesia condemns these actions," Widodo posted on his Twitter account @jokowi following the Israeli action.

The head of state also highlighted that Indonesia has urged the UN Security Council to act swiftly on repeated violations committed by Israel. (Antaranews)

At least one hundred people staged a rally outside the East Java Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) building in Surabaya on Monday to condemn the Israeli aggression against Palestinians in Gaza and demonstrate their support for Palestine's struggle for independence.

"We support Palestine (efforts) to become an independent and sovereign state," field coordinator of the rally, Mila Mahmudah, said.

During the rally, the protesters, who claimed to belong to the Indonesian Association of Young Islamic Fighters, waved Palestinian flags and unfurled banners declaring their support for the Palestinian people.

They also stepped on an Israeli flag placed on the road and demanded the Israeli aggression be ended.

Speaking at the rally, Mahmudah said the conflict between Israel and Palestine has continued since the latter is not accepted as an independent and sovereign state by the UN.

The objective of Monday’s rally was to show humanitarian support for Palestine's struggle for an independent and sovereign state, he added.

He said he did not gather a larger number of demonstrators for the rally on account of the COVID-19 pandemic and that all participants were asked to follow the health protocols, he added.

"Because of the pandemic, we limited the number of demonstrators to only one hundred. The rally was only held for one day," he said.

Mahmudah said he will organize another rally if the demonstrators' wish goes unheeded or if the Israeli aggression continues.

The Indonesian government must take a firmer stand to help Palestine achieve independence and sovereignty, he added.  (Antaranews)

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi (center) and members of the National Energy Council (DEN) posed for a picture on electric motorcycles at the Transportation Ministry building in Jakarta on Tuesday (May 11, 2021). ANTARA/HO-Doc. DEN -

The increased uptake of electric vehicles will lower the consumption of fuel oil, thereby reducing Indonesia's current account deficit, a member of the National Energy Council (DEN) representing stakeholders Satya Widya Yudha stated.

"If we can have two million electric motorcycles, two thousand electric cars, and 600 electric buses, we can save at least 2.35 million barrels of fuel oil in a year," Yudha remarked here on Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday (May 11), eight members of DEN, representing stakeholders, held a meeting with Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, DEN's member representing the government.

The eight DEN members are Agus Puji Prasetyono, Musri, Satya Widya Yudha, Herman Darnel Ibrahim, Daryatmo Mardiyanto, Eri Purnomohadi, As Natio Lasman, and Yusra Khan.

Prasetyono and Musri represented academics, Yudha and Ibrahim represented the industry, Mardiyanto and Purnomohadi represented consumers, Lasman was for technology, and Yusra Khan for environment.

Yudha pointed to reduced carbon emissions from transportation being dominated by means of land transportation.

"Hence, the Transportation Ministry's initiative to boost the uptake of electric vehicles is reasonable," he stated.

However, it necessitated the provision of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, including free parking, free toll road tariff, or cashback while buying electric vehicles to attract public interest to use them.

The government will additionally require to build more charging stations, he remarked.

"The government has targeted to establish 88,045 charging stations by 2025, and until now, only 57 stations have been built at 35 locations. The development of charging stations would need to be accelerated," he pointed out.

According to Yudha, DEN's members had also sought recommendation for its strategic plan for the 2021-2025 period, especially on the Transportation Ministry's inter-sectoral policy to achieve the mixed energy target.

The strategic plan has focused on applying the national energy mix plan based on fair, sustainable, and environmentally sound principles in pursuit of energy resilience, self-sufficiency, and sovereignty.

The DEN will optimize monitoring on the implementation of inter-sectoral energy policies encompassing the national energy policy (KEN), national energy general plan (RUEN), and regional energy general plan (RUED)//ANT
