In addition to attending the 40th UN Human Rights Council Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi is also scheduled to attend the 46th Conference of Ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. The meeting will be held on March 1 to 2, 2018 themed 50 Years of Islamic Cooperation, Roadmap for Prosperity and Development.

To reporters, Indonesian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said that Indonesia in the OIC ministerial meeting would encourage discussion regarding efforts to increase the cooperation of OIC member countries in the fields of economy and science and to handle safe and orderly migration flows.

“For Indonesia, there are several issues that will be of concern related to encouraging increased cooperation between OIC countries in the fields of economics and science and technology. In addition, Indonesia will encourage cooperation support from the OIC for cooperation on the Global Compact for Save, Orderly and Migration,” Armanatha said.

Furthermore, Arrmanatha Nasir said that the 46th OIC ministerial meeting would produce a declaration that gave political commitment to the OIC member countries for various issues related to the theme of the meeting. In addition to the declaration, according to Arrmanatha, the 46th OIC Ministerial meeting will also produce 130 resolutions covering various issues such as financial, political and Palestinian issues.

He added, several issues that would be of concern in the 46th OIC Ministerial Meeting included the progress of the peace process in the world, efforts to fight global terrorism, and the OIC 2025 Action Program. (VOI/ANDY/AHM)

The Indonesian government will campaign for the plan for membership of Indonesia as a member of the UN Human Rights Council to interrupt its participation in the 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. The plan was delivered by Foreign Ministry Spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir, Thursday in Jakarta. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi is scheduled to attend the UN Human Rights Council Session. Arrmanatha said the theme of the campaign for Indonesia's membership at the UN Human Rights Council was True Partner for Democracy, Development and Social Justice. The selection of members of the UN Human Rights Council will be held in November 2019 for the membership period of 2020 to 2022.

"In addition to attending the Human Rights Council Session, the Minister will also take advantage of this opportunity to conduct an Indonesian candidacy campaign as a member of the Human Rights Council for the period 2020 to 2022. The selection will be conducted in November 2019. As you know, the Indonesian theme for candidacy is True Partner for Democracy, Development and Social Justice,” said Arrmanatha Nasir.

Meanwhile Director of Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Achsanul Habib said the plan for Indonesia's membership at the UN Human Rights Council was to represent the Asia Pacific region. For this region, according to him, there are four positions to be contested by 5 countries including Indonesia, namely Japan, China, South Korea, Iran and the Marshal Islands. He is optimistic that Indonesia will be able to occupy the position of member of the UN Human Rights Council given the history of Indonesia's commitment to the promotion of human rights values, both at the national, regional and international levels. Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi is scheduled to attend the 40th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland from 25 to 28 February, 2019. The meeting itself is scheduled to be held on February 25 to March 22. To reporters on Thursday in Jakarta, Director of Human Rights of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Achsanul Habib said that Indonesia's participation is in the context of conveying Indonesia's main point of view regarding strengthening human rights values ​​at the multilateral level as well as achievements and progress at national and regional levels. According to Achsanul Habib, in the UN Human Rights Council Session, Indonesia will put forward the issue of protecting human rights in line with national interests.

“The presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Human Rights Council Session is a form of Indonesia's commitment in the promotion and protection of human rights values. Of course what we will propose is that which is in harmony with national interests, Indonesia's interests,” said Achsanul Habib.

Achsanul Habib explained some of the agendas that will be discussed in Indonesia's participation in the 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council including the issue of Palestine, Myanmar, issue of civil rights, economic and socio-cultural rights and the rights of vulnerable groups, women's empowerment, child protection and disability. In addition to attending the 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, Indonesia will also hold a number of bilateral meetings at the Minister of Foreign Affairs level. At least 15 bilateral meetings are scheduled to be held by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Indonesia, Rob Swartbol met at Raffles Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/2) to discuss issues related to maritime cooperation on Bilateral Maritime Forum. In his opening remarks, Minister Luhut said that Indonesia has cooperated with many countries to emphasize different cooperation in each form.

“Indonesian maritime diplomacy is prepared to provide an outline of Indonesian maritime  vision to respond international challenges and related issues. This becomes an integral part of Indonesian foreign policy. Indonesian direction for greater cooperation is through not only multilateral forum but also bilateral challenges. As one of the implementations of the maritime diplomacy, the bilateral forum coordinated by the Coordinating Maritime affairs has form a bilateral cooperation from several countries, such as the USA, the Netherlands, Denmark, UK, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. They emphasize different cooperation in each forum. As we are all aware that Indonesia and the Netherlands join in equal, mutual and beneficial partnership. Indonesian participation in IORA is also encouraged to promote technical assistance, capacity building and exchange of information and science," said Luhut.

Minister Luhut added that number of follow-up cooperation in priority area has increased, including cooperation in maritime sector, such as the establishment of the bilateral Maritime Forum 2016.  The MoU in Maritime Cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands was signed in 2016. On the occasion, President Joko Widodo made a visit to the Netherlands. The major role of maritime development of the two countries serves as the basis of the MoU. (VOI/NK/RHM)
