Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani has urged G20 member states to take concrete actions to address the food crisis, ahead of the 8th G20 Parliamentary Speaker Summit (P20).

P20 is a parliamentary forum of G20 countries. The P20 summit is scheduled to take place on October 6 and 7, 2022, in Jakarta.

"P20 is a strategic forum to push G20 member states to address the threat of the food and energy crisis," Maharani said in a written statement released in Jakarta on Monday.

The summit will be held in the parliament building compound in Jakarta as part of a series of meetings ahead of the G20 Summit in Bali in November.

The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has chosen the theme of "Stronger Parliament for Sustainable Recovery" for the summit, which aligns with the theme of Indonesia's G20 Presidency, “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.”

The DPR will raise four issues at P20, including building an inclusive economy and strong economy to address the latest challenges--food and energy crises and stagnation.

Maharani said food is one of the issues that countries across the world are facing now.

"Moreover, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the global community has encountered a new challenge--the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has led to another global uncertainty," she added.

This issue has, directly and indirectly, led to scarcity, which has had an impact in the form of high food and energy prices, she noted.

Therefore, as the G20 President, Indonesia can benefit from the momentum of P20 to bring about a positive impact on global issues.

"Indonesia cannot remain silent towards various global conflicts. Through P20, which is in line with the G20 Summit, we must play a role as a bridge or mediator to solve them, including the food crisis," she said.

The world parliaments must be united in the struggle for food and energy security because the issue affects the interests of people at large, she added.

"We live on the same planet. Therefore, we must prioritize cooperation, collaboration, and mutual help to build a better world for all," she said. (Antaranews)
