Member states of the United Nations (UN) rejected sanctions Israel imposed on the Palestinian Authority, over Palestinian efforts to seek the views of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel's decades-long occupation. On January 6, 2023, Israel announced a package of sanctions against the Palestinian Authority, including withholding millions of dollars from its tax revenues, halting construction activities in the West Bank, and revoking several government officials' "VIP" travel passes.

“... we reject the conviction as an act upon a request to seek the views of the International Court of Justice, and more broadly in response to a General Assembly resolution,” the UN states said.

"As member states of the United Nations, we reaffirm our unwavering support for the International Court of Justice and international law as the cornerstones of our international order, as well as our commitment to multilateralism," they said in a joint statement.

They expressed deep concern about the Israeli government's decision to impose punitive measures against the Palestinian people, leadership and civil society following a request by the UN General Assembly for the views of the ICJ.

On December 31, 2022, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution seeking the ICJ's views on the legal consequences of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. Signatories to the statement include Algeria -- in its capacity as Chair of the Arab Summit and members of the Arab Troika, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Pakistan -- as chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
