The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture provides opportunities for artists throughout Indonesia to share their knowledge and experience with students in elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools / vocational high schools. However, the Ministry will firstly provide technical training on these artists, in Artists Go To School Movement (GSMS) program. After inaugurating the traditional game exhibition at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten on Monday, August 27, 2018, Ministry of Education and Culture's Director General of Culture, Hilmar Farid said teaching students requires special knowledge related to child psychology and classroom management.
"Not all of them have the competence to teach students, especially to elementary school and Junior High School. Now we do some kind of technical guidance. Those who have received technical guidance will be goven certificates. So it's not an artist certification, but specifically for those who want to go to school. Because pedagogy requires special skills. It requires knowledge on child psychology, classroom management, and so on. That's all we give. If they could, they will be given certificates, and they will be automatically accepted to teach at the schools. So that the administration accountability would be much easier, Hilmar Farid said.
Previously, Hilmar also said, the involvement of artists is done because Indonesia is experiencing a shortage of art teachers in schools. Therefore, it will collaborate with 1,300 artists, each of whom will teach in one school in 28 provinces through Artists Go To School Movement (GSMS). This program is carried out not only as a solution to the lack of art teachers in schools, but also as a means to strengthen character education. Hilmar said, there is still lack of character education for students in schools. Therefore, art lessons in schools will be used as a medium to strengthen character education which is one of the focuses of the administration of President Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla in the field of education.
