VOInews, Jakarta: The 78th session of the UN General Assembly raised the theme 'Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and Its Sustainable Development Goals Towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability for All'. Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said the theme was inseparable from the global achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit.
"And this year the timeframe for achieving the SDGs is halfway through, but only 12% of the SDGs targets are on track, as stated yesterday by the UN Secretary-General. Therefore, global efforts are needed together to accelerate the achievement of SDGs," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said while attending the High-Level Week meeting of the 78th UN General Assembly Session, in New York, as stated in an official statement received by VOI in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/9/2023).
The Foreign Minister also said that in his remarks, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, conveyed a message that the world must unite to face various global challenges.
"Currently, we are entering a multipolar era that presents new opportunities to realize justice in international relations. However, multipolarity does not by itself guarantee peace. Therefore, strong and effective multilateral institutions are needed to realize peace," the Foreign Minister said.
The Foreign Minister also revealed that the UN Secretary-General said that the current global governance is not supportive and that the UN Security Council and the Bretton Wood System are obsolete and need to be reformed.
"The Secretary-General also said that the world is polarized between North and South, East and West. Therefore, multilateralism must be revitalized to reflect the current situation and be able to face global challenges," she explained.
In addition, the UN Secretary-General also said that more compromises are needed to realize peace and prosperity along with the importance of peace in achieving the SDGs.
"Without peace, the SDGs will be increasingly difficult to achieve. And the Secretary-General also reiterated the need for a 500 billion USD stimulus fund to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs," she added. (VOI/Ranov)
