Closing the series of celebrations for the 79th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the Indonesian Embassy in London organized the People’s Party 2024 at Queens Park Community School, North London, on Saturday (24/8). The festival was attended by more than 1,600 members of the Indonesian diaspora.
Indonesian Ambassador Desra Percaya mentioned that although this event is an annual activity, this year’s celebration was particularly special. In addition to celebrating Indonesia’s Independence Day, 2024 also marks 75 years of bilateral relations between Indonesia and the UK.
A variety of Nusantara foods were presented, including yellow rice, satay Padang, pecel lele, cendol, and various other dishes sold by 24 Indonesian MSME vendors in the UK.
The Indonesian Embassy also invited special performers from Indonesia, including dangdut singers Melly Lee and Ridwan Naibaho. The duo, who gained popularity through a talent search competition for Indonesian dangdut singers, entertained the audience with a variety of popular songs.
The event was also enlivened by performances from the Indonesian diaspora living in the UK, including the Angklung Ensemble, Indonesian Diaspora Project, Lewat Jam Lima Band, MidnightBlueVelvet Band, and Tom’s Chair Band. Additionally, the Cendrawasih dance group performed, with some members being students from Papua who are studying in the UK.
The celebration featured a parade of traditional fashion costumes with unique accents, created by S P Lestari Design. The Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations would not be complete without the typical 17th of August competitions. On this occasion, a cracker-eating competition and a nail-into-bottle competition were held. These competitions were not only for children but also attracted adults and even some local residents.
The People’s Party 2024, organized by the Indonesian Embassy in London, was the culmination of a series of activities celebrating the 79th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence. The celebrations also included a virtual 17th of August quiz and a photography competition with the theme of "Love for the Homeland" on social media platforms.
