The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry Continues to Fight Illegal Logging
Written by Ani HasanahThe rampant illegal logging spread in various regions in Indonesia has made the Ministry of Environment and Forestry work hard to combat the crime. According to Indonesian Minister of Enviroment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar in a special interview with Voice of Indonesia in Jakarta on Tuesday (20/3), her ministry has repeatedly dealt with illegal loggers and dragged them to court to account for their violation.
“ We work also very hard on this illegal logging, within three years we have been having more than 144 times operation to combat this illegal loggers. And there has been cases are prepared for bringing them up to the court, more about 174 documented and prepared to the court and about more than 60 cases are being in the preparation,” Siti Nurbaya said.
Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar added that in addition to illegal logging cases, the narrowing of forest areas in Indonesia is also caused by several other factors, such as the massive population increase in various regions. Therefore, it will continue to make various efforts, including developing special institutions related to forest ecosystems such as Forest Management Unit. Based on record of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, at least 1.1 million hectares or 2% of Indonesia's forests shrinking every year. The Data also mentioned that from 130 million hectares of Indonesia's remaining forests, 42 million hectares of which has been cleared or damaged. Ministry of Environment and Forestry Committed to Creating Eco- Friendly City

To achieve the program, Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry will continue to strengthen cooperation with various parties and specifically to supervise the city forest area. This was conveyed by Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar in a special interview with Voice of Indonesia in Jakarta on Tuesday (20/3).
“The Ministry of Environment and Forestry will strengthen collaboration with city planners, real estate, and people to make our cities greener and healthier. We actually has also ministerial decree issuance in 29, kind of guidelines for forest city management and providing supervision for city government on their preparation for city forest. So, we work on that aspect now,” Siti Nurbaya said.
Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar moreover stated that the commitment to realize environmentally friendly city is in line with the 1945 Constitution related to the implementation of Human Rights. Due to the right of people to live in a healthy and green environment is part of human rights. Related to the linkage between forests and cities, Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar explained that the city is heavily dependent on forests because it supplies vital needs for people in cities such as water, fresh air, and other necessities// Trs.Rezha/Edt.N

LIPI Cooperates with Japanese Scientists
Written by Ani HasanahThe Indonesian Institute of Sciences -LIPI through Bogor Botanical Gardens Conservation Center, and Kyoto University in Japan jointly collaborate with the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development -SATREPS supported by Japan International Corporation Agency -JICA and Japan Science and Technology -JST for the period 2016 to 2021. The research program entitled "Producing Biomass Energy and Material Through Revegetation of Imperata Fields" aims at developing technology capability of restoring Imperata fields for productive land and to produce and utilize biomass for energy production and renewable materials.
LIPI Deputy Chairman of Life Science, Dr. Enny Sudarmonowati in a press conference at Bogor Botanical Gardens Plantation Center, West Java on Wednesday (21/03) said that in addition to the cooperation programs with Japanese scientists, LIPI also obtains laboratory equipment for research. She also explained that LIPI doesn’t wants to rely only on government funds. Thus, LIPI decided to conduct international cooperation.
“This is what we want for LIPI. In addition to cooperation programs with leading Japanese scientists, LIPI also obtains equipment and laboratory tools. So, we do not just rely on government’s funds. The government’s funds are now getting less and less. So, we establish international cooperation,” Dr. Enny Sudarmonowati said.
Enny Sudarmonowati added that the tools officially accepted by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences are the latest version of existing tools. This research tool can be used not only by LIPI, but also by Indonesian people according to the existing borrowing procedures to be agreed between LIPI and the borrower. (Egi/Trans)

Government Promotes Gross Split Scheme to Asian Industries
Written byThe government has promoted a new gross split scheme in oil and gas contract to Asian industries, during the Offshore Technology Conference Asia (OTCA), in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
"This year, we have offered 26 new oil and gas contracts of work to investors," an expert staffer for strategic planning of the Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry, Yudo Dwinanda, stated. The ministry, he noted, has improved the regulation on production-sharing contract under gross split scheme for upper stream oil and gas business. The government has issued ministerial regulation no. 52/2017 on the amendment of ministerial regulation no. 8/2017 on gross split contract.
Yudo remarked that the ministerial regulation is aimed at addressing various issues that have hampered the investment in the sector, while investment has been a key for economic growth.
"The gross split scheme is one breakthrough to overcome the problem, as a substitute for regulation on Production Sharing Contract (PSC)," he added.
Among the stimulus in gross split scheme would be fiscal incentive. On the other hand, the government has revoked 90 regulations, which were seen to have hampered investment, and simplified the licensing process to create a conducive climate for investment. However, the government did not set such a high target for oil and gas contract of work in 2018.
"Of the total 26 contracts of work we offered, it would be good to get at least 13 contracts, or half of it," he explained.
The government did not make any offer during 2015 to 2016 period, while in 2017, it offered five contracts of work.
"So far, investors have shown a positive response, and it is not true that the gross split scheme is discouraging," Yudo revealed.
