The government is trying to make Yahukimo Regency, Papua Mountains Province a center for food security. Both in the province and eastern Indonesia.

"Not only as a strategic gateway to the Central Highlands of Papua from the southern region of Papua, Yahukimo also has the potential to support Papuan regional and even national food security, due to the availability of extensive agricultural land," said Presidential Chief of Staff, Moeldoko, Tuesday (9/8/2022).

Because geographically, he said, Yahukimo Regency is still isolated and access to connecting roads is still very limited. So that food security must be strengthened first, while waiting for the road access construction process to be completed.

The government of Yahukimo Regency has prepared 200 hectares of agricultural land with water sources for irrigation. This agricultural land is not only prepared for rice production, but also for other commodities that have high economic value.

Nevertheless, Moeldoko admits that in order to achieve food security in Yahukimo, synergy efforts are needed from all parties.

"Moving the food security program in Yahukimo is not easy, considering that in 2009, Yahukimo was hit by a famine. In fact, Yahukimo has tremendous potential to become a food center. So, there needs to be encouragement from all parties," he said.

Meanwhile, the Yahukimo Government also hopes that the central government will help local governments to build infrastructure connecting roads between Yahukimo to Wamena and Yahukimo to Jayawijaya.

Yahukimo Regent Didimus Yahuli hopes that the government will immediately open an access road from Yahukimo to the Pepera port center to facilitate distribution and transportation routes to and from Yahukimo.

"Yahukimo is very strategic, has an area of 17,152 square kilometers with a population of 350,880 people. Now the mountainous Papua area has been brought closer, the opening of roads and access to and from Yahukimo can support the progress of mountainous Papua," said Didimus. (RRI)

The Ministry of Agriculture invites the public to love domestic agricultural production in the midst of the threat of a food crisis in the world.

So that if all this time, people depend on wheat, which is now rising in price, they can replace it with local food.

"If we depend on wheat for high prices, what should we do? Love local food consumption, love domestic production," said Director General of Food Crops of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) Suwandi, in a discussion entitled Assistance for Sorghum Cultivation from Upstream to Downstream in Jakarta, Tuesday (9/8/2022).

Suwandi said that since 1976 wheat entered Indonesia, the existence of local commodities has dwindled. In fact, according to him, local food has many opportunities.

He gave an example, if soybeans are attacked by imports, the enthusiasm of farmers will decrease. This has an impact on the narrowing of the area of soybean agricultural land.

As a result, the price becomes uncompetitive until it becomes cheaper to import.

As for a number of food substitutes for wheat include, sorghum, cassava, sago, and others.

"The substitution of wheat, one cassava, the two sorghums that we are discussing, the three sago and other local foods, hotong, hanjeli in some areas are sweet potato, then taro, breadfruit are also available," he said.

It is known, that world wheat prices soared due to the Russia-Ukraine war. To anticipate this, the government encourages the increase in the cultivation of sorghum as a substitute for wheat. (RRI)
